Super Milk-Chan
スーパーミルクチャン
Milk-chan is a girl who lives in a house stuck on the side of a building with her two sidekicks: Tetsu-ko, a paranoid robot that looks like a bottle and Hanage, a green blob with a mustache. Milk is poor and she can't pay the rent, especially after her attempt to extort a local ant family fails. However, she is saved because the president himself offers her a job (some sort of a secret mission). Milk-chan answers the phone to receive missions from The President by saying something like "Hello, Bank of Hokkaido. Just kidding!" After getting her mission, Milk-chan and her sidekicks take off aboard the "Milk-6" helicopter to go on her mission. Did I tell you this is a spoof of 1970s spy thrillers or some sort of Bond movies? The best advice I can give you for this anime, unless you are intimately familiar with Japanese culture (more so than any average Otaku even), unless you know their pop-stars and movie stars, and cultural jokes just as well as you know the culture of your own country, watch this anime dubbed for English. ADV did a fabulous job dubbing this anime. They watched the anime, "got" the jokes that only someone native to Japan during the time the anime was aired would get, and "translated" the jokes for a (primary) American audience. I watched this anime dubbed and highly enjoyed it. I loved the"potty mouthed" characters, giggled at the jokes and basically had a good time with this. Honestly, if I had to compare this anime to anything, I would compare the style to the crap that is currently coming on Cartoon Network (Adventure time), the "attitude" of the anime... well, I really haven't found ANYthing like Super Milk-Chan. The music, is completely forgettable, the art is childish, the sound, eh, the characters are enjoyable, the story... what story? The thing this anime shines for is the jokes... but only if you watch it dubbed. I tried it subbed just for giggles and it was awful.

If you watched a fansub of this, it was probably translated by me, someone who could barely speak any Japanese at the time. I'm sorry. Our subbing group actually had 2 native speaking translators on it... and they both refused to translate this weird weird show saying they'd rather tear their ears off. With a review like that I figured, damn, I gotta see this! It was so bad, I ended up translating it myself. While it is horrible, it is sort of funny in a bizarre acid trip sort of way. The awful timing on some of the gags made for some painful antijokes.... all inall, I've recommended this to many friends as a prank. I don't think I'd submit myself to this again given the opportunity. But maybe you're a sicko masocist, in which case, enjoy.

Do you remember being a teenager and staying up too late watching TV? Often times you would discover the strangest things. Well Super Milk-Chan is just one of those type of shows, that was definitely my impression after an episode or two. Well turns out it aired in Japan on the 24hr a day TV Channel Animax and late was unsurprisingly when it was on or 00:45 in the morning to be exact. There's no denying that it's charm is definitely best extracted when fighting off slumber. That was again when I first experienced it two nights ago when looking for something to watch beforegoing off to bed. So Super Milk-Chan is a bizarre comedy of sorts about a 5 year old superhero called Milk (despite the fact she doesn't appear to have any superpowers), her malfunctioning robot maid Tetsuko (who is often distracted by love) and the near completely pointless Hanage (a pet slug with a mustache). Each episode follows a pretty exact formula with Milk-Chan receiving a mission from a man who if my sources are correct is definitely the president (and also the funniest character in the show). These missions are often pretty empty and rarely are even acted upon by Milk-Chan. Still so long as the objective is somehow completed then it calls for Sushi or something to celebrate. This is basically all the show is and honestly it's a strange mix of terrible and brilliant. I could never say this is a good show because there is really no hook, the humor is pretty methodical and slow and there is rarely a punchline to anything. But I get the impression that once your snared you'll find it hard to escape until you complete the series. It can be quite addictive. Animation wise the show takes the appearance of a less frantic Japanese styled Ren & Stimpy. Nothing is over animated with fast exaggerated movements but the whole thing certainly has the look of something out of the ordinary. I watched the series via the ADV dub. Hilary Haag plays Milk-Chan and she sounds like a 5 year old so I guess she nails it but if that will appeal to you or not is a whole other question. Robot maid Tetsuko is played by Monica Rial in this robot sounding could understandably be totally annoying voice. I liked it and think it added to the surreal nature of the show but yeah this could be a total turn off for some. Finally the President is played by Mike MacRae and it's a perfectly funny performance and his introduction as the President made me laugh everytime. In Summary the whole show is just this bizarre strange thing you are watching and it'll really depend on you if that strangeness appeals to you or not. For example there is an infinite time loop that occurs in the first couple of episodes, at first it's not particularly funny but as it continues for a good minute or two I honestly found it hilarious. It was at that moment that I pulled down the barriers and just let this show take me and from there I enjoyed it.
