Alright, I don't get it... What did I just watch? So, what do we have? Well, it starts out with a narrator introducing to us the world where the story is about to take place. And then we see a someone finding a wounded boy...and again the narrator explaining that years passes and that Ires and Ledlight (the two characters we saw before...but seriously, how are we supposed to know it since no one introduced them to us. To me they were just random characters 1 and 2)...did nothing interesting during some years, and then there's a fight with...heck, I don't care any more! The battle ends just like itbegun, leaving us completely clueless...and the narrator starts speaking again...and again...and again. Man, why don't you shut up, no one is watching anyway! Basically, this OVA is just a patchwork of scenes that you don't understand, linked between them by a sloppy narrator, and showing characters which names you don't even know! Great! And actually this whole OVA seems to be the summary of a video game! Well, I don't get it: why would you want to create that? You can't promote the video game with it: it just spoils the entire story, and when you finish it, you will more likely puke on yourself than buy the game. This anime should not exist. Seriously, don't watch it, even if there's a gun aimed to your head, just don't watch it! (I wish I could go back to before I randomly downloaded and watched this...)

Well, this is a weird one. I've never played any of the Rebirth games that this OVA was based on, so taken out of context, none of these scenes make much sense to me. The story is presented in a really haphazard manner. Each scene is broken up by a narrator accompanied by a screen full of text, making them all seem disconnected from each other. This also makes the story difficult to follow, and it seems more like a collection of animated cutscenes that could have probably been in the game. The audio is well done, but didn't blow me away, voice actors deliver their linesfine, and sound effects sound good enough. The soundtrack didn't stand out, though. The animation is pretty nice to look at, which is a plus. However, that's not enough to make this anime any good.

This is the swan song of Idea Factory as an anime studio. The multimedia strategy of promoting video games with anime produced, directed, and written in-house ended here due to diminishing returns. Fittingly, this is Idea Factory's cheapest anime OVA, but still a surprisingly enjoyable watch. This is the best looking Idea Factory OVA. There are some well-done fights, and there are no eye-bleeding CGI backgrounds. But this is not because Idea Factory decided to clean up their act (yet): all animation was outsourced to WAO World, which was mostly active as an animation subcontractor in the 2000s. Granted, WAO World also gave us Mars ofDestruction, but that was a shovelware dating sim! Rebirth Moon Divergence was a fantasy RPG, which Idea Factory probably took more seriously (before they started to make almost entirely otome games). The OVA entirely consists of cutscenes from the associated video game strung together with expository text. In a medium filled with unnecessarily expository dialogue, this is one of the worst cases of underwriting in anime there is. The story is told in a dull, mechanical way, but when it bothers to execute the story, it executes interesting ideas. For once in a fantasy anime, I don't feel like I'm watching someone's D&D campaign. It's about a world in constant turmoil and our heroes' desperate struggle to save their world. There are serious stakes and some character drama. Furthermore, it combines elements of Asian religion and mythology with a Western fantasy setting, leading up to a great, existential ending. Despite all this, the characters feel like lifeless marionettes, and you get the impression that this is only part of a much larger story. While in media res directing is an effective tactic, this OVA is so underwritten that it feels like you didn't experience much of anything. In general, if you want to watch a cool anime OVA with a general story that feels like it's from an 80s sci-fi OVA, Rebirth Moon Divergence is a good watch. Otherwise, you won't get much out of this.
