Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga
青の祓魔師 終夜篇
Unlike his twin brother, Yukio, Rin Okumura never wished to know about their parents and the circumstances surrounding his own birth. Yet the master of time, Mephisto Pheles, gives Rin a key that transports him 40 years into the past when his late mother, Yuri Frederick Egin, was merely a child. With Mephisto's guidance, Rin leaps through the years of Yuri's childhood and her adolescence as an exorcist-in-training. Early on, Yuri meets Shirou Fujimoto, Rin and Yukio's adoptive father. As Rin follows Yuri and Shirou's lives, he witnesses firsthand the initial appearances of Satan, his true father, and the horrors unfolding at the True Cross Order's special Section 13. Yuri's unique connection to Satan eventually leads Rin to the truth behind the most horrific event in exorcist history and the day he and Yukio were born—the Blue Night. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I can't believe i'm saying this, but this is my favorite season (and it's not even focused on Rin & Yukio XD). I did really enjoy the Beyond the Snow Saga but due to some actions and decisions made in that season by some characters (*ahem* Yukio), it sits below this one. Overall, I felt this season felt very full circle and just brought to light a bunch of questions both the cast and us as the audience were wondering as well. Some Overall Points: 1. The Animation/Art-style: I'm probably in a minority but this Art Style really grew on me over time and honestlylike it better than S1's animation by quite a bit. Everyone complains over the change of studio but I like it this way. Animation wise, It's good. Not bad, but not great. It's enjoyable and have no qualms. 2. Story: Now I hadn't gotten to this arc in the manga yet so this was fresh story for me, but I was awaiting this Arc once I knew we were getting it. It didn't disappoint at all, and found this to be probably the best arc so far of the anime. Very in-depth on the past and a bunch of character growth for Rin. Just so good. 3. Characters: I'm so glad this was a flashback arc because after the events of Beyond the Snow I didn't want to see Yukio's face AT ALL. So this arc was nice. We get to finally know about Yuri and Shiro's relationship and how all the events fall into place. Ahhhhhh, I love Yuri <3 Overall, This season was really really great and If we could somehow get a Season 6, I'd be so elated :)

I will make it short. This is definitely one of best arc of this series, and you definitely should not skip this arc because this arc tells us about the past, the origin of Satan and Rin & Yukio 's family I've been waiting for so long and finally can see this arc being animated, and I'm glad it's finally here. They didn't include some scene from the present, but I think they did it because they don't want to ruin the story so they focused on history from the past. Maybe they'll bring it up in next season. Overall, they delivered the story so well that they canbring the feeling that I feel when read the manga.

I just finished this season, and it is one of my favorites. The biggest reason for this increase in appreciation is the constant flashbacks that answer most of the questions the story has hinted at for a while. This season focuses on Father Shiro Fujimoto (Rin and Yukio's foster father), Yuri Egin (Rin and Yukio's mother), and Satan's backstories and relations to each other. The story is enjoyable to watch and can be a tearjerker if you really get into it. "It's quite tragic," as Mephisto says. It's so satisfying to see everything come together, especially because it's so obvious the author has had thestory planned out since the beginning. In the greater context of the story, I became disinterested in (reading the manga during) the content from the previous season. The author does such a good job with Yukio's character, and he and his intentions are greatly misunderstood. So much so that when I read his arc, I really could not care less... But I think people (including me) keep forgetting the ages of these characters; they are only 16, they are just kids going through puberty with a lot of emotions, but being forced to "grow up" way too quickly based on their situations. It's kind of sad, but this is a plot point seen in a lot of fighting/war anime. ANYWAYS. This season made me finish the manga, and I am so glad I did. I cannot wait to see what else the story has to offer. (For context, this season left off at chapter 120 of the manga, and currently we are at 158 as of June 2025.) I recommend that you guys to keep watching and commend those who have reached this point. The story keeps getting better, and sometimes the filler and boring episodes are necessary to set up the scenarios for greatness, like this season. Also, I keep getting annoyed at people complaining about the animation style change. The original anime came out in 2011; it would be surprising if the animation style remained the same. Furthermore, we are SO lucky to get a continuation of the story. It took 6 years for season two to release after the first season, and another 7 years for seasons three, four, and five to release after the second. (aka it's been 14 years since the OG anime, and 16 since the manga began). I am just happy we are getting good animation. Yes, the style is different and can sometimes look weird, but it has vastly improved since the previous season, and you get used to the style that you don't even notice it. Like, ppl need to get a grip, not everything has to look pretty to be enjoyable. As someone who waited for season two, it feels a bit entitled to complain about the animation style when this is what we have been wanting. Anyways, change isn't always bad. That's my spiel. ANYWAY, the final episode of this season was so satisfying to watch because there are parallel scenes in this final episode and the first episode of the series. If anyone is on the fence about watching this or watching the other seasons to reach this point, I promise it is worth it.

Is it better than the previous season? Yes. Does that make it good? ... No. The frustrating part about Ao no Exorcist and especially this season is that the story seems amazing. It is wildly intriguing to watch the story of the Blue Night, of how Satan fell in love with a normal girl, of the part that Rin and Yukio's dad played in all of it. All of the characters in this season are really interesting - in fact, more interesting than their children, in my opinion. Unfortunately, this adaptation just doesn't do it justice. Though the animation seems to have improved slightly after the lastfew seasons made by Studio VOLN, it's still far from being up to today's standard. The art style is also still... A choice. I still missed the season 1 art every time I started an episode of this season. The editing has a slightly weird pace which doesn't exactly help when your animation & art does absolutely nothing to fill up the unnatural slowness of dialogue. The overall direction just wasn't good, though I'm sure that also has to do with budgeting. Man, was it frustrating to watch such an interesting story be butchered by the execution of its presentation. This series deserves better. In conclusion, never have I wanted to read a manga more after watching an anime. But not for the right reasons, I fear.

I honestly loved this season, the animation was already clean but the faces don’t look as weird like before in the last season Blue exorcist story-line is one of the unique ones I’ve watched and read. I can agree that blue exorcist is not always good but i think it shows so many unique mixed emotions throughout the show. This anime is still one of my favorites and I really hope for it to be continued. I’ve waited years since season 2 and i didn’t expect it to come back but i’m so happy it did because this anime just happened to be one of the firstones I watched when I started watching anime but that’s really not the only reason why I feel ao attached to it, I think I would fall inlove with this serie if I discovered it today and even if people think it’s trash or boring I personally love it just the way it is.
