(This is my first review and i'm not english, so i'm sorry for my language) I will be clear : this is not a bad series. It isn't a cosmic rip off like many others anime but this is not either a good anime. First the story is fair, the world is quite intriguing but this is clearly not a revolution. The scenario is really slow, some episode are the same quality level as a filler episode in Naruto. This is unequal and sometime totally useless to the advancement of the story. For the art, this is classic. Too classic... The animation is really static, and the backgroundis cheap. The sound is one of the real problem. The voice acting is slovenly, some characters like Shuu don't act, they just read a text. And there is no english or french version, so we are convicted to ear one of the worst dubbing of history. And for the music, it's decent but there is only 15 tracks different, and we ear some of them every episode. The track " One of the Few" is exasperating ! There is only two tracks who are more than decent : "Resource" & "Brick in the wall". The characters are like the story : too classic. And this is really difficult to be concerned by there action. May, Ein & Zero are clearly the best characters because there are well develloped. Xuan (maybe not his name in the english traductionl) is my favourite characters but, like Rosso, she's not really useful. Rosso & Xuan maybe deserve a better devellopment. Fear is a great deception, because she is the best character and his devellopment is totally stopped in the middle of the anime. Shuu is basically a clone of Shinji in NG Evangelion, but in more weak. The story don't progress because of him. And finally, Dolly is insupportable. He is a sort of comic relief and you will probably want to punch your TV evrey time he is here. To finish, the biggest problem of this anime is that it's not pleasant to watch. When I watched it, I was bored and I look at my timeline everytime because this is tedious. And this is why I can't recommend this serie to everybody. This is too classic for an anime, a distopian story, a travel story or whatever. Clearly, only the more motivated people will continue to watch this after the fifth episode.

I personally enjoyed it although I generally have a soft spot for old animes and a hard spot for newer ones. It had a proper unique story unlike all the isekai, evangelion clones these days. I first saw it as a kid 17years ago and did not understand half the stuff that was going on. I always liked the concept of the show and overarching plot I could make out then so in 2021-2022 I decided to watch it for reals. I got real bored binging all the new animes and this made me feel good about anime again. The story explores a polluted Earth withvarious flavors of human colonies while on the group's search to an Eden like colony. The protagonist of sorts in the group is a Shinji like guy Shu from a dystopian colony where humans are being used as a resource to store data (like blockchain/barcodes). Shu isn't any dystopian wasteland Jesus, just that he was rescued by the group and was able to start thinking for himself. I felt the settings and timelines were pretty accurate about the future for a show made in the 90s. The initial episodes are slow. There are two virtual characters Eightron and Dolly who kind of appears to save the day or move the plot initially but after the first 5 episodes they stop becoming deus ex machina. This keeps the story not reliant on them. There are a few fillers here and there only if the viewer doesn't want to explore the different kind of colonies they encounter but hey even Bebop had them. Those episodes were actually interesting to see how various humans innovate to survive. Animation-wise its pretty much what you expect from 90s anime, some reused scenes and movements, the walls which are going to be animated have a different color and so on. The music is memorable but feels repetitive over several episodes. Anime direction wasn't much a thing back then so the characters and frames feel like manga slides i.e. robotic transitions. If the viewer can tolerate classic animes, this is an excellent watch nevertheless. It gets quite gripping after the first 8-9 episodes. I am rating this good devoid of recency bias. The ambiance is somewhere between Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion and story elements are pretty believable and realistic unlike say DitF
