Queen Millennia
新竹取物語1000年女王
The year is 1999. Amamori Hajime is just a normal, everyday elementary school student, trying to study and hanging out with his crazy pals. But then one day as his father is testing a piece of equipment he has been working on, something causes it to blow up, taking the house with it! Now orphaned, Hajime is taken in by his uncle, who is an astronomer. There at his uncle's observatory, he meets a girl he's seen before and developed somewhat of a crush on. He finds out her name is Yukino Yayoi, and her parents run a ramen shop in town. But even better than that, she's his uncle's assistant! What luck! But Yayoi isn't exactly what she seems. There is a reason she helps out Amamori-san at the observatory. She is the Millennial Queen (Sen-Nen Joou), specially chosen by her home planet, LaMetal, to go to Earth and help prepare for the possible annihilation of the planet. What will cause this disaster? LaMetal has an extremely elliptical orbit, which sends it very, very near Earth every 1000 years. When it gets close enough, the earth reacts, causing all sorts of natural disasters. Although she was chosen with the idea of protecting LaMetal in mind, her personal plan is to evacuate as many humans as she can to LaMetal, so if their planet is destroyed, they will survive. However, there is one person who strives to stop her plan, the head of the Millennial Theives. Why does he want to stop Yayoi? And how does he know about the Millennial Queen, anyway? (Source: AniDB)

Queen Millennia is a sci fi space opera in the visual simile of Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Harlock, but in terms of its delivery it's like watching one episode of Galaxy Express 999 stretched out for an entire show's 3-4 season length... It is immensely satisfying when viewed against the other works of Leiji Matsumoto... I've watched almost everything and this was practically my last stop unless I step over and pick up Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato. This show is glorious and expansive. Picture Quality: Sentai recently released a restored print of the show on Bluray and that was my viewing method. The picture quality is fantastic. I had the opportunity to see the Galaxy Express 999 on crunchyroll stream compressed with scratches, popping color splotches, and other artifacts, and I watched that again on the S'mores released dvd, and then I saw GE999 tv on the bluray that Discotek released with the restored picture quality and sound that looks and sounds great. Queen Millennia looks and sounds even better. I'm shocked that we got it at all, but moreso, I'm shocked that it has not a hint of agedness in it. This is a very good print of the show, it looks new. The show is kind of like Three Body Problem, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the Tale of Princess Kaguya. It has a steady stream of developments, but like One Piece it never breaks flow to re-establish its story... it just steadily adds in breaking events so that episodes both follow what has happened, and introduce their in episode locales, vehicles, and events that feed into the continuing story. Compared to the other Leijiverse works this is far more like watching something on HBO and it makes Queen Millennia feel far more contemporary than anything else Leiji Matsumoto ever put out. It still looks like Leiji Matsumoto made it though... We've got our staunchly steadfast unhandsome yet manly potato spuds, and weeping willowy leading ladies straight off the 70's french model runway. I'll throw my full recommendation behind this one... I've always respected that the Leijiverse is a very YMMV collection of shows and movies that won't appeal to everyone. The only limiting factor for this show that might pause my recommendation is the DUB only crowd, if you're unable to view subtitles then I'm sorry... for everyone else, I say this is a worthy jumping on point as your first Leijiverse show, or... if you've seen the others but you haven't seen QM, then by gum... pick yourself up and get on that! we HAVE IT in America NOW! What are you waiting for! It's on Hidive and it's on Bluray and it's on Apple TV... or you can buy episodes on Amazon Prime.
