The Big First-Grader and the Small Second-Grader
大きい1年生と小さな2年生
Timid Masaya relies on his friend, second-grader Akiyo, to help him manage walking to school. Despite his tall stature, the path through a shadowy grove of trees is too frightening for him to enter alone. When a flower Akiyo is holding falls apart, Masaya wants to do something to cheer her up. Unfortunately, the only place that he can get bellflowers is a faraway field in the shadows of a lone pine tree—and getting there will be a far more frightening journey than his already difficult daily commute. Okay so no review have been written about this short piece- so I figured I might as well write a brief one. This anime is a short 25 minute film about one 1st grader and one 2nd grader. This is a very lighthearted story that definitely isn't going to be objectively a "great" or standout anime- but its cute, fun, and a nice feel-good story. It follows the 1st grader (which is a boy) as he is determined to travel all alone to a distant place in order to make the 2nd grader happy through getting her one of her favorite flowers. There's really notmuch else to say about the story. Characters aren't developed that much but what can you expect from such a short film right? And it doesn't even matter. This isn't the type of anime you watch for the story or character development. Have a bad day? Just watch this anime. I found myself smiling through parts of it and it tells a nice, cute short story. Would I recommend this? For sure. It isn't for everyone- but its a simple anime that is sure to either brighten your day up or help you take a break from the more serious anime's you might be watching. Here are my scores for anyone curious: Story: 6/10 Art: 7/10 Sound: 7/10 Character: 5/10 Enjoyment: 8/10 Overall: 7/10

A simple story, well executed with a very memorable, pastel style. One of the ultimate pieces on simple life in pastoral Japan which is not a Ghibli film. Doesn't have nearly the emotional throughline to make it a hugely memorable story but it's got its heart along with some fun animation. Characters have strong designs and do really feel like children - though the adult characters are purely there as archetypical plot devices. The animation is a showcase of really great naturalistic character movement, really distinguishing the style. The only technical fault I saw was some of the editing felt a bit jarring. A decent iyashikei storywhich will not surprise you in the least; it's good healing.
