Usalullaby

5 mins of black&white rough-drawn blobby figures floating/tumbling around on a giant blobby figure. It's Teletubbies but gloomy. There's no real story here. This student art project is merely animation for the sake of animation and noise for the sake of noise. It's effectively a high-effort low-quality screen saver that goes "hHhHhHhHhHhHhHhn..." at you. From the official synopsis one can infer this is the animation equivalent of "thoughts and prayers" and "sending good vibes". Name pun: Usa[gloom]/Usagi[rabbit] + lullaby = Usallulaby[gloomy/rabbit lullaby]. They also do Sallulaby, which might be さあ(saa)[come on, now] + sleep. I'd've expected some worthwhile application of mythologies of moon rabbits (they certainly look like rabbidsand whatnot in space and on the moon), but they don't really do anything with it. I suppose the moon rabbit's self-sacrifice symbolism could be construed as part of the extraneous narrative of the synopsis in that the rabbits are laboring away to mollify the moon-like dolphin they live on, but it looks much more like mutualism/commensalism play to me. Perhaps this is just an alteration on the moon-rabbit pounding ingredients in a mortar, here reimagined as rabbits massaging the moon to sleep. There seems to be superficial analogy to eyelash mites, perhaps as a Sandman analogy. Why a dolphin? I dunno. Maybe a fetus was too mainstream, maybe there's a pun in there. 1/10 (where 5/10 is average). If you like this, '2001: A Space Odyssey' is probably your favorite movie.
