Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town?
たとえばラストダンジョン前の村の少年が序盤の街で暮らすような物語
A long time ago, the ancient saviors of humanity founded a village as their haven, with their descendants said to assist humanity in times of extreme chaos. This village, Kunlun, is located just beside the infamous "Last Dungeon"—a place where monsters of unimaginable strength reside and which serves as the hunting grounds for Kunlun residents. Despite being accustomed to defeating powerful enemies since childhood, Lloyd Belladonna regards himself as the weakest in his village in terms of magic, strength, and intelligence. Even so, to fulfill his desire of becoming a soldier, he goes to the Kingdom of Azami to enroll in its military academy. However, as someone whose upbringing defies common sense, Lloyd's innate power might just prove to be the key to end the crises enveloping the kingdom! [Written by MAL Rewrite]

This show is bad. Why you ask, one of the most important things in an anime is the characters and the mc obviously, good animation and sounds are nothing without characters that you will be happy to see, not like this pathetic garbage excuse of an mc Lloyd. I understand the idea of an op mc who is oblivious about how strong he is and the harem around him (not that I like it too much) but in this show, they took it on a whole new level I am pretty sure that the mc doesn't think that he was in adangerous situation in the first 11ep and he is just dumb, not the funny dumb but the annoying kind of dumb, the kind that if the show was good it becomes horrible because of this dumbness. Enough about the bad mc, the story is trash, we hardly know anything bout the villains and suddenly (spoilers) they are doing it for Lloyd just because (end of spoilers) yeah sooooo this isn't even the type where it's bad but you can watch it to waste time no, please don't watch.

Did you want another fantasy with a main character that is perfect, and with a comedy that relies on people screaming and getting hit all the time and girls falling in love with this MC in two seconds? Well, my friend, this is your chance! If you didn’t, run away. Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogatari (yes, I had to copy-paste the name because I don’t even know it, lmao, why do they make names like these) is a fantasy anime that is mediocre and poor, but not THAT bad. The story is the same fantasytrope: a guy, called Lloyd, who comes from a little town that wants to be its pride and joy by entering the hero academy. He makes a lot of friends on his way because of how nice and innocently pure he is, and the most important is that he is strong as hell and he didn’t even realize that, even being insecure about his own strength and power. The repetitive joke that goes around all the time is that he is soooo strong that everybody gets surprised when they see his huge power. Just another character whose creator is in love with him. The story starts with a pacing that is chill. It is acelerated, but is not so rushed. Later on, by the third episode, it just explodes. The pacing gets real rushed and you don’t have a clue of what’s going on. A lot of characters, suddenly, change their personalities and they reveal their real personalities, and the funny part is that they are just dumbasses that start to behave differently. That was taken out of nowhere. One witch suddenly is a lost princess, one of the army (that is a potus for the first episodes) suddenly becomes some kind of traitor (or mister culprit, as they call him). And from one moment to another they are invading a castle and having a fight against a Demon Lord that has possessed the king. Wait a minute… what? Am I watching the same story that I was watching the last week? Things like that happens all the time. One episode they are doing one thing, and in the next one they are in a total new stuff, and this is not episodic, this is just a bad work. Characters with no charism nor meaning appear like that and don’t contribute anything to the plot. They can’t stop over-joking, and in the next minute you are supposed to take them very seriously. In terms of characters, what I want to center the most is how this work’s author don't have a clue. Not even one single woman in this anime is well writen, they are not even close to be decent characters! I want to start with the one I hated with my entire heart. Selen is the typical drooling dog that only cares about main character’s dick. She is the most freaking annoying, disgusting, shallow and pathetic character I’ve seen in a while. All she does is to talk about Lloyd, to follow him, to blush around him, to be useless and to do her favourite task: to keep away, to threaten and to act like a cringe yandere to every woman that wants to talk to Lloyd. It is so vomitive that I wanted her to disappear from the show. The worst part is that a big part of the comedy in this show is about her being disgustingly nosy, and meddling in Lloyd’s interaction with every human being. If you still think that this kind of jelausy jokes are funny instead of painful, I admire you. Selene was a princess who was known as the “belt princess” because she had a belt wrapped on her head that couldn’t be unwrapped, and she seemed to be an interesting character the first twenty seconds, until she meets Lloyd an he unties the belt and lets her free. She takes that as a sign of fate and decides that he is the love of her life. After that, she just becomes Yuno Gasai but without the killing, just the cringe part. What is it Yuno without her killing and her dark aspects? Well, nothing. That “nothing” is what Selene is. At first I thought that those jokes about her being unbearable wouldn’t take a great part on the story, so I letted pass, but when I was about fourth episode and I knew it wouldn’t stop, I knew this was going to be really lame. When she knows the witch that lives with him, she totally freaks out and cries and makes a whole unnecessary drama. Even after that moment, they start to deal with serious matters, and she is just like “then… are you his wife?” and cries. STOP, THE JOKE SHOULD HAVE ENDED A LOT AGO. I want to think it as a joke; otherwise I will be the one crying. The other females are a thieve that has not even one interesting feature but she is reckless and a hot mercenary. That’s all. Later we have the witch I mentioned Lloyd lives with: she is so clumsy and stupid that all the jokes that revolve around her are about her being beaten, her screaming, her insulting her boss (and everytime she does that, her boss appears and makes fun of her. All. The. Time), her tripping. For those minutes that I spent watching those scenes I thought I was watching an Adam Sandler’s movie. Only the fart jokes were missing. The last female is the witch’s boss that has her relevance but that is only a loli that can’t be taken serious and that all she does is to praise Lloyd and to annoy the witch because she has nothing else to do. Amazing female characters, I’m so proud. Letting them aside, the other problem here is the dear MC, Lloyd. He is so perfect that it really kicks me in the masculine genitals that I lack. He is not interesting at all. He is just so good that everyone loves him for no reason. I just... I can’t say no more because this main character is almost non-existent. The visual art is mediocre, is colorful just like a fantasy is, and soft; animation is nothing to save. In conclusion, this anime doesn’t have anything good to rescue. It’s bad written, is disorganized, has terrible characters, lousy pacing and has like no story. Don’t watch it, not even if you love fantasies.

Comedy is Subjective. And the short answer is simple: Of course it is, don’t be ridiculous. Except when it isn’t. Clear? No? Oh...I thought this was going so well. Comedy is subjective because different people laugh at different things. That doesn’t mean it isn’t, nor does it mean there’s something wrong with our own sense of humor – it just means it’s not for us. Some people don’t find ‘Monty Python’ or ‘The Hitch-Hikers’ Guide to the Galaxy' funny. They are, of course, wrong because they disagree and that will never do. What’s that? I’m not the centre of the universe nor the arbiter of whatis and isn’t funny? Really? Have you got written evidence of that? You have? Oh okay, they’re not wrong either...it’s really not that complicated. Funny isn’t universal, it’s very, very personal. So personal in fact, that when someone doesn’t find a show funny they start issuing death threats and demanding the people involved be erased from existence. The effort and aggression people put into not liking the people who wrote/created comedy they don’t like is staggering and frankly a bit odd. On the other hand, I’d say comedy isn’t subjective when it fails to amuse the people it was specifically created for. Let's say if you like a particular stand-up comedian and, in the middle of a funny set, he tells a joke which repeatedly fails to elicit a laugh from every audience he plays to, then it’s not funny. Move on. If you create shows aimed at the same audience who loves said shows and they hate it...it’s not funny. You’ve failed. Kill yourself, now. Do it now. Except...maybe you haven’t failed? Maybe it’ll find a different audience who’ll love it? Or maybe it won’t. Maybe I’ve no idea what I’m talking about and should shut the f*** up? On balance, that seems increasingly likely. The point is, just because you don’t find something funny, doesn’t mean it isn’t. Unless the person was specifically trying to make you laugh, in which case it probably isn’t. Or you haven’t got a sense of humour. Or the person misunderstood what kind of thing you find funny. Or something else. Or possibly you’ll find it funny next time you hear it because you either didn’t get it or were too busy worrying about other things that would make your time more valuable. And that you can take it as a boon or a bane to your "funny" bones. And now, back to Last Dungeon. Those recommendations you see that are similar to this show, they're oh-so-wrong. Instead, I'll refer us back to Spring 2018 with a little unknown show named Last Period, based off a gacha mobage game. To the minority whom have watched Last Period before, the similarities between this and Last Dungeon aren't that hard to match up with the same exact humor style of underlying fun with the silliness and stupidity cranked up to 11. Sure, what Last Period has an edge over Last Dungeon with lies in its blatant KonoSuba-ish tactic of references and puns strewn in for the comedic effect that fits and works, but that's not to say that what the latter lacked doesn't make up for in the comedic space. Last Dungeon rather, uses common tropes (in this case, a character that's incrediously OP on the outside and weak on the inside) and gives it the comedic push to good effect. It doesn't need to be "on the ball" or "over the top" like similar brethren out there, but it only needs to do enough to make it stand out from the crowd with the fantasy adventure meta lore, balancing out plot for comedy that doesn't feel like it's both oversaturated and stretched to the limit (though it can be felt at times). If anything, Last Dungeon excels at its vast range of characters who each serve a purpose, even if they're nothing special to scoff at, other than the impending dumbfounded-ness that lingers at each and everyone's unique traits for timely comedic hilarity. Starting with the MC Lloyd Belladonna, you might think that he's the classic case of the usual OP character at first glance (and you're definitely correct at that), but take a look at the village that he lives in, and everything you see is the exact opposite. It's so easy to misjudge and label Lloyd as the typical OP-for-nothing character, but yet even when his ambition is made clear to protect his own village by earning his powers through hard work, that is a sign of the above-average generic character development that is a refresher in the fantasy landscape. Other than his non-common sense thinking that shrouds over the many girls that flout around him, I'd say that they have their strengths and weaknesses (although the one definite strength lies in the "intentional" harem): there's a loli grandma in a childlike body; a witch that beneath the coat lies a princess figure that otherwise is known for karma-cussing over the loli grandma for being Lloyd's guardian each and everytime; the occasional yandere "Cursed Belt" princess who always simps over the MC for a "white knight" appearance; the mercenary with one-arm whose love for money is unparalleled; and the strong girl with the fascination of matching her powers to the MC. Plus, the many side characters that serve to help integrate Lloyd into the human world, from the obtuse generics of a magic academy to the villains with hidden motives, everything is there to provide a course for the MC to follow and tread through, pretty much like a typical JRPG (but without the RPG elements). IMO, I personally love when characters make a mockery of themselves, only to be hilariously lambasted of the perceiving hitting rock-bottom when reality hits hard. Of course, they do show concern for one another when situations go off-hitch. At first I was skeptical of the "quantity over quality" of Liden Films helming 4 shows for the Winter season alone, the likelihood of production teams crashing midway to meet deadlines is a serious litigation point in the anime industry. But surprisingly enough, Last Dungeon managed to stay consistent with its decent production values, not to mention the easily simple, yet recognizable character designs and comedic facials for the relentless comedy hilarity; good ol' adventure-fantasy labelled visuals that are pleasing to the eye, and the above-average animation to back this show up. Same goes with the music, which also is the average so-so quality that isn't worth remembering, but fine at best. My only plus point is Luce Twinkle Wink☆'s ED, after the Gamers! vibe of a nice ED, the same vibes carry over to this show, and I instantly fell in love with it from the very beginning. What a song to end each episode with the 4 central girls (Marie, Selen, Riho and Phyllo) for that harem take. Once again, in the same slew and veins of fantasy adventure shows, the simple case of "Comedy is Subjective" goes straight down to the viewer, and that's for you to decide whether this is worth or wasting your time. If yes, then great, come along for the ride, but if not, this isn't the type of show you're looking for. To say that I recommend this "good" show is just undermining the significance of Last Period and similar contemporaries which may have done the comedy gag job the same or better. Try other similar shows first before coming back to this one, and see how your tastes vary.

I'll get to it straight away. This is not worth your time. It's best if you just watch some small clips on youtube or something. The story follows a boy who believes that he is weak just because everyone else between him is strong. To put it in perspective, he is level 99, while all the others around him are level 100. But because he has low self-confidence, his level gets reduced by 20. (btw, there are no level concepts in the series itself, I was just making an example. Don't misunderstand.) It's a great and unique concept... but the story itself is just a pile of clicheand bad plot. It's a shame because if it had taken itself seriously, it would've easily become one of the greatest zero-to-hero stories. But instead, we got a "comedy" anime that isn't actually funny. The characters are pretty boring and forgettable. They are all one-dimensional characters that are trapped by their archetypes, not being able to develop. They don't develop because the series needs to run the same old jokes over and over, and developing just one character would ruin the entire formula of their joke. The animation is decent. It's stuttery at times, and even has a lot of off-model frames, but it's decent. Don't expect too much. The music is a mixed bag. The ost is dogsh*t, even insulting at times. It's just fart noises and vibration that makes the action feels... comical, but not in a funny way. The OP and ED however are complete bangers. I could play them on repeat all day and still not find them boring. The enjoyment I have here is non-existent. The first few episodes, 1-4, had me laughing and had me hoping that this will be a good anime, or decent at the very least. Oh boy, how wrong I was. The middle to the end is so boring that I felt like I wasted my time watching it. There wasn't any tension to the serious scenes at all since we all know that it will end in a comical way. Also, the jokes that were funny in the first few episodes are beaten to death, stretched across the entire season. It's annoying, making the same jokes over, and over, and over, and over again. I'd laugh way harder if I saw a 2010's Dinosaur meme. Overall, just like I said, don't watch this anime. If you didn't listen, then that's on you. Prepare to get bored in this anime if you decide to watch it. (3.8/10)

Tatoeba is one of the hidden gems of the season, plain and simple. It’s nothing revolutionary or mind blowing, but it’s fun, and at the end of the day, that’s what anime is about. What I like most about this series is the fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Tatoeba knows it has an OP protag with a harem and all the generic fantasy tropes that we’ve come to expect from this genre, yet it pulls them off in a satisfying way. The effective use of comedy and banter throughout the series creates a really fun and light atmosphere that makes every episodeseem like a 5 minute short. The characters have their own fun quirks and feel unique in the context of the story, and their relationships with the MC, are a blast to watch. The story isn’t much to write home about, but you won’t even notice because you’ll be too busy laughing your ass off every episode. The technical aspects of the show aren’t anything special, there’s one notable fight towards the end of the show, but that’s about it. The art is a really cutesy modern style which I enjoyed, and the OST is pretty good as well. On a side note, remember when anime didn’t have to boast the highest technical stats for it to be enjoyable? Tatoeba feels like a return to that. Good old fashioned fun. I can’t recommend this show enough for someone who’s looking for a meme in anime form. If you want something funny to watch and just turn your brain off to mindless entertainment, this is it. It’s been the highlight of my Mondays for the past 3 months and I will definitely be sad to see it go. Tatoeba gets 8 snake belts out of 10.
