Like with most recap movies, the series is still much better. That said if you were interested in Revue Starlight before, it was probably because of the revues and music, which are, for the most part, in here in their entirety. If you have watched the series before, the movie pushes aside every character who isn't Karen, Hikari, and Nana to make time, which definitely makes this the inferior viewing option. But, the Nana and Giraffe conversations, the new graphics of the title cards, and the final few shots make the entire thing a fairly new and refreshing experience, so I'd still recommend it. The last thingI want to note is that, as someone who had very much enjoyed the original series but hadn't watched it since my first time three years ago, watching this movie very much reinvigorated my love of the series. It reminded me why I loved it, and since rewatching the movie when it released on Blu-Ray back in February, I've watched this movie at least 3 more times, as well as the entire original series. It really is an amazing series, and I cannot recommend it more to those who feel it had lost its shine.

It's simply great to see our Starlight girls again after quite a while. As already indicated in the MAL Synopsis, Rondo Rondo Rondo is a compilation from the main series. Therefore I will be relatively brief with this review. There is no new plot or action waiting for us, much more we get a well made summary of what has happened so far. All the characters and their backstories which we know from the main series are also summarized. Also in this film, the focus is on our duo Hikari and Karen, who want to fulfill their dream together. The animation is exactly as we already have seenbefore, all the elements are presented very nicely. The details can also be clearly seen here. A few minor details have been changed compared to the main series, but in the end it's more or less exact the same. The music and songs always played a big role in Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight. We already know the OP "Hoshi no Dialogue" and the ED "Fly Me to the Star" from the series. With "Saisei Sanbika" we hear a new song that was composed for this film. This one is also special and nice to listen to, the Revue Starlight vibe can be clearly heard. As someone who enjoys Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight a lot, I was naturally hyped for this film, even though it is only a compilation. It's just nice to see our stage girls again and how they give everything to make their dream come true. Those who have not had anything to do with Revue Starlight before will surely enjoy this film even more. The whole plot is overwhelming. Nevertheless, I definitely recommend watching the main series, everything is way more detailed there. But also for those who already know all of these before will like this one. Just enjoy what has happened so far once more! In the end, I am sure that we are all hyped for the "real film" with a new action and plot "Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight Movie", which will also be released later this year. Let's keep following the development of our stage girls and how their dreams come true!

It's hardly more "from the perspective of Daiba Nana" than the series itself, and its compilation film presentation leaves us with less to chew on than the main series. Some parts are presented differently in interesting ways, like the abridged depiction of Mahiru becoming unhinged because Karen stopped paying as much attention to her. But most of it is like the show, which is spectacular, especially in light of the second movie. So, even if this is a step down from watching the full 6 hours or so, it's still really good and the extra stuff in there for Nana *is* good, and it setsup the motif of the second movie at the end. It's worth a watch. Also, the credits song is one of the best tunes in the franchise, IMHO.

In brief, Rondo an excellent refresher on the events of the series, but a poor substitute. If you're short on time, watch the original. It's not that long. But if you've already seen it and want to jog your memory before watching the sequel movie or visual novel, then I strongly recommend Rondo. The original Revue Starlight series is already so lean in its storytelling, leaning heavily on evocative abstractions, that when pared down by more than half it becomes too disjointed and confusing. That isn't to say that Rondo doesn't cut the series as deftly as it can--it does. The editing is captivating. Butaside from repeated stock scenes (the opening, the ending, the transformation sequence), every scene in the original series is load-bearing, charged with vital purpose. None can be discarded without diminishing the overall work. The scant new scenes which contextualize the film as a reminiscence of Nana aren't enough to make this movie essential watching, but are an enjoyable metatextual wrapper to the events of the series. I imagine to anyone seeing Rondo in a vacuum, they'd only serve to make the film more confusing, but they're a nice bone to throw to fans of the original. A treat, not a meal. This film exists for a such a narrow niche that in all likelihood, if you're reading this, it's not for you. Want to get into Revue Starlight? Don't start here. Hot off the series and looking for more? There's not enough new here to bother, just go watch the sequel movie. Are you the sort who only watches movies and not series? I imagine you'll leave this film confused and unfulfilled. There are far more people I wouldn't recommend this movie to than people I would. BUT if you fit the criteria outlined in the opening, give it a watch. I imagine you and you alone won't be disappointed.
