Kaiju No. 8 Season 2
怪獣8号 第2期
Following the massive operation that led to the confinement of recent recruit Kafka Hibino, otherwise known as Kaijuu No. 8, the Defense Force has been puzzled by how to deal with him. Kafka is the first kaijuu to side with humans, and after careful consideration, he is eventually transferred to the Defense Force's First Division in the hope of adding his power to the strongest division, capable of handling any threat. However, some people are still doubtful about Kafka, and he must prove his worth in the next mission. Kafka and the First Division are soon dispatched when a massive horde of ant-like kaijuu begins wreaking havoc. Thanks to the combined strength of Kafka's friend Kikoru Shinomiya and their captain, Gen Narumi, the mission seems to progress as it should. However, when Kafka fails to transform into his kaijuu form, the dreadful Kaijuu No. 9 joins the battle with only one goal—to eliminate him and steal his power. Although the situation is looking grim, Kafka must overcome his most difficult trial yet with the others if he wants to keep pursuing his dream: fighting side by side with his childhood friend and Third Division captain, Mina Ashiro. Kaiju Season 2 actually turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Let’s break down what worked and what didn’t. First off, you can clearly see some lessons learned from Season 1: the pacing feels way smoother, the humor lands better, and the overall disaster vibe feels more grounded and detailed. The show also dives deeper into the kaiju’s (enemy) plans and motivations, plus gives more attention to a few side characters, which makes the lore way more engaging. And it’s not like the quality dipped—far from it. The visuals and animation are consistently solid, with every episode having its own unique touch. There are even some bolddirecting choices that hit hard emotionally, whether it’s making you worry about a character or pulling you into a specific mood. I especially liked the thematic shift: Season 1 was all about “chasing your dream,” while Season 2 leans into “believe in yourself, your family,” and that big Aurora-song question: who am I really? On the flip side, a couple of issues stood out. Personally, I think they overdid it with the tears—lots of characters getting emotional in almost every episode. Then there’s the budget allocation: the insanely polished CGI OP and those tracks from Aurora and OneRepublic are amazing, don’t get me wrong, but it clearly ate into the episode count. We only got 11 eps, and nearly all of them end with a chibi filler short. Kinda kills the vibe. And honestly, this season doesn’t really feel like a complete arc—it’s more like one long setup for the next big battle. They’re patching plot holes and laying the groundwork for the future, and sure, some irreversible changes happen, but there’s no real sense of closure. It feels like a “Part 1 of 2” situation, stretched across the whole cour. Not the best choice, IMO. Still, if you liked Season 1, this is definitely worth watching. Characters keep growing, the fights are hype, the kaiju look awesome, and even the flashbacks and cameos from the first season are done with care. So while the first arc is officially closed and this one’s mostly setup without a finale, Season 2 doesn’t feel disconnected at all—it flows naturally as a continuation.

This felt so terribly written. I dont think I will watch season 3. This anime has no story just fights after fights but no character growth. For growth you only get to see them say "he is very strong", "he has surpassed the limits". When was this written? Hero or should i say zero, kafka is a boring character to begin with. He is nothing special like eren who was the actual key to everything in AOT and to add to the misery of this kafka character, his supposed to be girlfriend is the top strongest fighter in this anime and she is too coldto kafka. Maybe she should have been the protagonist and she should have become kaiju. Kafka is a dumb character with nothing going for him but a bunch of kids calling him "uncle" and a boy working hard to save him. This is pathetic, even with kaiju powers he is useless.

Well, S2 is more of the same, so while my review is negative, if you (for whatever reason) liked S1 - you will like this one too. Now to the details. Characters. S1 had lots of them, but next to no personality or development for anyone. S2 rolls in and offers several personal arcs, but executes them horribly: excluding the girl that has recent events that weight her mind, the rest of the crew in their respective arcs suddenly get a personal problem that came out of thin air with no build up, spew generic empty words for half an episode, have one fight -and their problem is now completely solved while the character in question got a power-up. It feels extremely cheap and causes nothing but irritation. World/monsters. The same problems as S1 - somehow a society that has been living under a constant kaiju threat is completely unprepared for assaults, enemies pop up without a single warning but humanity refuses to learn the lesson or do something about it. As for kaijus - again, the strongest is just some dude in an animator suit, and if you came into an anime named Kaiju expecting kaijus - well, jokes on you, even when present they are just big targets, not an enemy anyone cares about. Fights. We are constantly shown lots of low-ranked guys doing zero damage while waiting for a named character to show up and oneshot the target. Is it fun? No, it is not. And it is even less fun to get a cliffhanger ending of the season in the middle of the final fight. Sure, you want to sell a movie for further profits, but what the hell man, have at least some decency. Overall - there are no memorable fights, because they are saved for the last season/movie, the fights that we got are extremely lame. Plot. Still predictable with obvious development and no sudden turns. Sure, it is functional, but it is boring to watch. Overall: S2 is a continuation of S1, but instead of developing whatever good things it had it just stagnates. It was boring to watch and the abrupt ending feels like an insult.

While I did enjoy this season, I feel Season 1 was better. The majority of this season felt kind of redundant and just plain uninteresting to me (though that may have to do with the fact that I read a bit of the manga). Either way, It was fine overall and there weren't any huge issues with this season, just some minor issues (that are completely my fault). The 2nd half of this season was pretty damn good though. Around like EP 8 or so, as it reached content I hadn't read yet, I found myself really enjoying it. I won't deny though that thisseason feels a little lacking in much development of the characters themselves. Some characters got a little here and there but I feel it wasn't enough. If i could be a little hypocritical.. 👉👈 can we get a season 3? 😗 that cliffhanger is diabolical lol. but it was alright overall and there maybe could be some parts that were better, but i'm okay with it.

Kafka is back to fighting more kaiju’s and so is everyone else! The enemies grow tougher, and so does the defense force! In season two, do we start off shortly after where we left in previous season, so we get to see both Kafka and his friends having to temporarily go elsewhere after the fight that ruined their base. We then see them having to face the escalating situation with the kaijus, which is done with some great combat scenes and some tough moments. The plot of the season very much follows the previous season, with it not tacking a turn but building further up on it.It does follow some types of story arcs, with there being a very smooth change between each of them, and mostly hiding the arcs in themselves. Pace wise the show is good at maintaining a pace that both goes high and low, giving viewers space to breath and digest, while also making it feel natural. The type of plot though is still very much action, with it mostly being around action or building people up to be more invested in the action, which is in some ways simple, but also dedicated to what the show wants to showcase. So the plot is almost only an action plot, but a very smooth and nicely made one, one that makes you invested and gives you time to enjoy it. Looking at the characters they are all very much the same as last season, with new characters still following the same style of character design. First, looking at our main characters, they are still very much the same people, but we see them affected by the previous seasons and we see them progress further, as new challenges arise. The side characters are a mix of old and new characters, with some from the previous season taking a back seat. As whole though are they still getting their deserved amount of detail, with them being shown changing or with us learning more about them. This combined gives a comfortable, but very dynamic cast of characters. Where you feel like you know them, but still learn more about them. Production quality of the show is very high, with them having great attention on animation, design and sound. Animation is top notch, with smooth combat scenes, a more fun style when fitting and doing even small animation details, both in fight scenes and out of them. Design wise is just as great as last season, with both cool, pretty and somewhat creepy designs showing up. Truly creating a modern world where monsters are not uncommon, and done with only reasonable reuse of assets and not just out of cost efficiency. A note to sound design are the kaiju sounds, since they are done with a very limited reuse of them, which is refreshing and helps make the monsters unique. With all of this, the production value of the show is very high and truly makes it enjoyable to watch. Concluding this all, can i only say its a great action anime, with good plot, characters and production quality. The only drawback is that it is very much an action show, but a great one at it. So if you like action can i only recommend watching the second season.
