浮浪雲
The year is 1866, the twilight of the Tokugawa era. As Japan boldly moves into a new age, one man couldn't possibly care less. That man is Kumosuke Haguregumo, a retired samurai who has since become the town fool. Though he still carries his twin-bladed katana, Kumosuke spends his days smoking, drinking, and womanizing, rarely coming home before dawn. At home, however, wait his wife and two children, Shinnosuke and Ohana, who are constantly troubled by Kumosuke's antics. As Shinnosuke grows older, he begins to understand the world around him. Troubled by his father's reputation, Shinnosuke attempts to live a life of honor, though finding what honor means in a turbulent era is difficult. As Shinnosuke navigates his relationship with his father, countless other warriors struggle to find their place in the ever-changing world. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

This movie is an interesting product of its time. I found it to be an enjoyable watch. I somehow found it in 1080p, which made its unique artstyle pop even more. Nice colors and composition, even a scene with some experimental arthouse animation. If you want a movie with a compelling story and characters however, you should probably look elsewhere. The only character with much of an arc is the son, Shinnosuke, and maybe Ichimonji. Kumo, although an entertaining character at times, is pretty sexist and just casually abuses his child? (Not to mention, cheats on his wife every chance he can get.) So yeah,if you don't wanna deal with outdated values, parts of this movie will drag you down. Overall, despite some of its issues, I'm glad I watched it. It was an entertaining way to spend the afternoon, peeking back into the annals of animation history, for better and for worse.

A classic it is not, but it is worth a watch, as it's enjoyably bad. Based on a long running manga series, which started in the seventies and oh yeah, you can tell. The story is of a lackadaisical courier/swordsman who is a master of a twins blade, but prefers to spend his time cheating on his wife, being a terrible father, drinking sake and not doing his job. The film is a comedy and manages to be funny at times, while having some truly disturbing scenes. The film is set at the closing of the edo period, where anti foreigner warriors are at large and shows the maincharacter coming into contact with a group of them and beating, but not killing them. It then shows his carefree life as he enjoys life with his wife, (whose single goal in life seems to be to get some from her husband, when he's not grabbing ass around town) and hanging with his son, (who is looking for a much better father figure, and finds one) and his daughter (a chip of the old block who does as she pleases too.) Not much really happens, but it gives insight into what must be a very dated, average, but oddly fun manga series. I recommend watching, you will somewhat enjoy it, though you may get a bitter aftertaste of old school sexism.

A journey through MadHouse chapter 9: a movie that is about nothing really. At the end of the movie I didn't understand what story it was trying to tell us or what themes it was trying to explore. It's just a movie as free as its protagonist. The movie lasts an hour and a half, with each minute that passes it only creates more doubts about where it wants to go and gives you so few answers that when you finish it you are left exactly the same as at the beginning. They want to address so many topics that they don't end up developing anyof them. There is a subplot of Haguregumo and his son, you think they will take the path of a father and son relationship, but in the end it doesn't end up having that much impact and the relationship doesn't suffer any major changes. It's a bit difficult to understand what the movie is about, it's not because of a lack of clarity in its plot, it's simply that the protagonist is so free in his way of living that everything ends up happening around him but without affecting him directly. Then you start to believe that the movie is trying to show us an important historical moment in ancient Japanese society. Shinsengumi members appear and they make a lot of emphasis on the new era that is about to arrive, but it is a subplot that also doesn't lead to anything. Ultimately this is a movie that I DO NOT recommend. You can invest the hour and a half that it would take you to finish this anime in something that you might find more fruitful. I have found hidden gems exploring Madhouse's filmography but unfortunately this is not one of them. It is a movie that has not aged well, and you can tell that it has been around for 40 years. Both the artistic and animation sections feel dated, you can see that the techniques used in this production are customs already discarded by the industry. I don't think it is a question of the year in which it was made, because there are other productions even older that remain fresher than Haguregumo. At the end of the day, there was no guarantee that every stop on this journey would be enjoyable.
