While disquised as Hermann, Russell wears make-up, dresses as a woman, and uses a voice modulator placed on his tooth to alter his voice. Hermann is hinted at being homosexual, showing discomfort around women and a strong dislike when Fujiko kisses him. Hermann's original name was Herr Maforditte, a play on the word "hermaphrodite". In the script, the character was going to have a child like voice. When it got to the the production stage, the character was changed to Herrmann von Diett with its pronunciation also changed and the voice to be a woman. The original name was kept in the international versions with various translations such as Herr Mafroditte (English dub), Herr Maforditte (Funimation subtitles), Hellmafordite (Italian), Herr Maffordite (French) and Helma Frodit (German).
