He is unsure of his piloting capabilies but likes to brag about the battles he's been in. He's really bad at being an under cover agent for Zeon. Bernie tragically dies at the end of the original show, making him one of the most famous characters of the Universal Century because of his sad fate, despite his relatively limited screen time. Tellingly, however, he survives in the official novelization of the original OVA.
