He defeated the Austrians during the battle at Custoza. While in that battle, his life was saved by Viscount Vittorio Martini, who was a young army officer way back then. In honor of Vittorio's heroism, Carlo Alberto gave the viscount a medal with a carved "mark of benediction" from him.
