甲竜伝説ヴィルガスト
Villgust is a peaceful world that exists parallel to ours. However, now an evil deity has been revived and has sent evil creatures to destroy many countries, which left darkness and terror to rule the world. The peoples' prayers and cries has reached out to the goddess Windina and in order to free the world from darkness she chose eight brave warriors to defeat the evil deity. Although blessed, these warriors are unaware at the path chosen for them, thus the two groups of Kui, Chris, Fanna, and Youta must meet up with Murobo, Remi, Ryuquir, and Bostov before they can follow the path chosen for them and defeat the evil deity. I've discovered some real weird obscure anime OVAs in these past few months. I like going through them because of how little I know about any of them until I get there, but they are very rarely any good. They're fun to watch while drunk though. This one comes kinda close to being alright by having a nice goofy tone and the kind of generic-but-not-generic fantasy world that was always fun to see in the era before Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest turned all Japanese fantasy stories into the exact same thing. However, the story's not much to talk about, and a lot of the jokesfall flat in that "ugh anime" way. Also, the final battle has all of the female characters except for the cat get their asses beat and the men save the day, and I feel like it's sexist, but only accidentally. Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit. One final comment of confusion: Is this... based on something? It would appear not, but.... That's kinda weird, because it feels like an adaptation.

I wrote this as it’s my first day on Myanimelist, and it’s close to midnight my time. I ranked some of my favorite shows and will continue as I explore the art from more, so please gimme a follow if you like my opinions thus far. Sadly I had to end my fun first day with a bad review. I saw this poster on 9anime and really enjoyed the Dragon Quest esc jrpg art style and with only an hour it looked like a decent watch. Villgust was just generic in terms of character cliches and poorly timed humor to a plot line of a snes rpgyou’d return to the store a day later. The fighting and animation overall was ok. But the overall package was a bit to slow paced. The show just left me with a “well that sucked” kinda thought when the final few minutes came around. I think other more flushed fantasy shows or ovas from the time may be more my speed. Thank you for reading :)

Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust is a somewhat generic, yet classically heroic fantasy tale, with prophesied heroes, a band of friends, a dark Lord with an army of monsters, and so on. On the face of it, it would seem like a good tale for all ages, but with the inclusion of nudity and raunchy humor, that doesn't seem to be the case, and confuses who exactly the intended audience for this work is supposed to be. With almost all the main characters being or looking like children, one could make the wrong assumption. Also, eight main characters are quite a few, especially for an OVA that'sonly two episodes long. It's kind of crazy, and a major failing of the story, since they're bound to feel cramped in a mere 56 minute runtime. While they feel like they each got just enough screentime as individuals, once the two groups of four met it felt like they hardly had any time to build a rapport and really get to know each other. Indeed, by the end they still feel like strangers, at least from my perspective. I personally think that, if it had some more room to breathe, that this story could actually work better, because on the face of it, even if it is generic and unsure of its audience, the basic story is fun. Still, given the story's flaws, the strongest aspect of this anime is definitely the art. It showcases high quality 90s animation, which is slightly improved by a CRT filter to smooth out digital artifacts and give it that warm, high-contrast feel for which it was produced and intended. The fights are cool, and the monsters and magic are visually striking, both aspects which are quite important for this type of fantasy tale. The sound is unexpectedly great, with a soaring orchestral score and solid voice work that sounds natural for the world they're in. The characters are each conceptually interesting, but they don't really have enough room between them to develop into anything more than their archetypes. Overall, while it's not perfect, it's hardly a waste of time. Give it a shot if you're particularly fond of that teeming genre of 90s fantasy OVAs, especially if you can overlook its narrative flaws.
