Hatsukoi Monster

TL:DR at the end ~Contains spoilers~ Have you ever thought about what it would be like if all the kids you babysit were hot bishie airheads who made penis jokes and periodically break up with you because of reason's shallower than the kiddie pool at your local country club? No? Good, then you're normal. The author of Hatsukoi Monster clearly is not. ________________________________________ STORY: 1/10 Exactly what you would expect from a shoujo story, the only difference being that the parts you can't stand (ex. melodrama, breakups, jealousy, stupid comedy) are magnified by a tenfold. Other than a couple laughs due to the absolute ridiculousness of making 5th grade boys looklike college students, and the author's deluded dream of pedophilia becoming legal, the story has absolutely nothing to offer. It will turn away even the biggest fans of the genre. ________________________________________ ART: 3/10 See, the thin I hate about shows like these is that they usually get very good art and animation, which could have gone to much more deserving series.. Luckily, Hatsukoi Monster wasn't gifted with good art or animation. It's very colorful, and the palette gives it a childish look, which I think they were going for, so that's good. But everything else is subpar at best. ________________________________________ SOUND: 3/10 Though Hatsukoi Monster wasn't blessed with good art, it was blessed with some AMAZING voice actors. Not all of them, mind you, and some of the characters' voices are annoying, even the ones that aren't intentionally meant to be annoying. That said, some of the voices help to bring the otherwise flat characters to life, and was probably my favorite part of the show overall. Other than that though? The opening and ending theme are hopelessly bad and the sound effects were no standout. ________________________________________ CHARACTER: 2/10 Oh god. This has to be THE most intolerable character cast I've seen in a while. The only characters that didn't make me want to break my screen were Kanade, Mafuyu, and Gin. Before that though, lets talk designs. If you had looked up bishie template, colored the hair all the colors of the rainbow with microsoft paint and then told your editor to slap a couple of accessories on each of them, I don't think I would have noticed the difference. On second thought, that's probably what they did... Personality-wise, most of them are just recreations from your typical reverse harem/shoujo story, from evil megane to trap boy to sis-complex older brother. And then the rest of them are just fifth graders cracking penis jokes like nobodies business. Though it was funny at first, it just becomes idiotic after the first couple times. And this is coming from a GINTAMA fan! However, I will say that Gin, Kanade, and Mafuyu manage to show a bit of personality, and are at least consistently amusing to view. ________________________________________ OVERALL: 2/10 TL:DR +Some good voice acting + Some likeable characters -Ridiculous plot -Filled with tropes amplified to become ever worse -Bad art -Not memorable OP/ED, or OST -Terrible character design -Most characters are annoying Hatsukoi Monster is an immature pile of garbage that can only be enjoyed if you are as immature as it's characters and humor. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not for me. Maybe next time, try falling in love with someone your age.

After watching the first episode I thought this was going to be a pretty good comedy. I even turned some people onto the first episode because I thought the premise was pretty funny and unique. Then it quickly stopped being funny and became a real romance story between a high school girl and an elementary school kid. After watching the first episode you might assume that the story is going to be big joke watching this girl try to find a way out of her relationship without hurting the guy's feelings, and also try to hide her relationship status from other people so they don'tget the wrong idea. Then it just becomes a story about how this girl is actually legitimately in love with this child. That story is just annoying and weird, and the background characters can be described in the same way. Even the art in this show is really hit or miss in very obvious ways. Sometimes it looks like standard shojo style, sometimes the perspectives are weird, or the eyes are drawn funny, or something else goes off in an easily visible way. I wouldn't recommend this show to anyone. Even the first episode, which I thought was decent at the time, is nothing more than a tease for what this series could have been.

Having watched through the entire series, I can honestly say that the title is suiting, for this series is monstrous. There is a lot I have to say about “First Love Monster”, and it’s not exactly what many may be thinking of. While this wasn’t a show I was entirely looking forward to for that season, but the synopsis still caught my interest. Unfortunately, what I ended up getting was twelve episodes of absolute garbage. Let’s get the story portion out of the way. Reading the summary is what made me want to give it a try, and probably made everyone else not touch it witha 20-foot pole. Subject matter like this doesn’t faze me that much. However, the thing that bothered me during my time watching it was the execution. It’s supposed to be a “love story” yet it’s everything but that. This doesn’t just pertain to the main plot as pretty much the rest of the show was poorly written. The only praise I can give it is with episode six. This was, without a doubt, the best episode and the reason being is it didn’t deal with the dribble that was the “love story”. Instead, it focused on the grown-bodied characters and how they play out in their school full of regular-sized kids, which I found quite entertaining. Seeing that made me wish the series was played out more like that. It wasn’t even halfway through when I knew there was no chance of redemption. And the only thing I can say about the finale was that it was pure garbage. What else goes with horrible writing than horrible characters? My guess is, since the main concept is already extreme as it is, all characters must have extreme personalities to balance it out. The problem is there’s no depth to these characters, which, adding their personalities, makes them utterly annoying. Our main heroine has to be one the worst I’ve seen in a while. I can understand it’s her first love and emotions can get mixed up in certain situations, but the reasons behind them are really dumb. Also, the concept of having a grown-looking child isn’t new as it’s been done in the short-form series “Recorder and Randsell” (done way better, in my opinion). There’s not even much to say about the support characters because they’ll just come and go. Everyone is two-dimensional, almost close to being one-dimensional. It’s at this point where the story and characters are bad enough that I can’t even care about the animation. Still, it’s not at all impressive. There were several episodes where you look at the character models and they look horrendous. I have to bring up episode six again because I believe that was the best animated episode (I don’t know what it is about it). Studio Deen has done some great shows in 2016, so adding this to their history won’t necessarily affect them. At the beginning of the show’s run, I personally defended it because I was aware that many were going to hate on it due to its premise. As the weeks went by, my defense for it lowered gradually to the point where I couldn’t care less about what anyone would say because this was simply pure garbage. Even when I knew it was bad, I still continued to watch because I was curious to see how far it can go. Now, I honestly regret watching it, and would never put myself through such torture (unless I watch with someone else). From an uninteresting story to almost non-existent characters and atrocious animation, “First Love Monster” is the last romantic comedy I would want to re-watch.
