Fortune Quest
フォーチュン·クエストL
Our story is set in another world, parallel to ours. We meet Pastel, an orphan girl, 18 years old, who lives with a group of adventurers in a small house. Pastel works as a writer and also a "mapper", charting towns, the countryside, rivers and mountains with sketches and illustrations. She is highly respected by her friends as her intelligence and honesty are extraordinary. Living in the house with Pastel, we meet Clay, a young swordsman; Trapp, the son of a bandit chieftain; Kitton, literally a working dictionary and a descendant of the Family Kittons; Knoll, a big guy a with tender heart; Whitey, a baby dragon; and Rumy, an infant sorcerer of the tribe "Elf." Together this odd group become involved in many mysterious adventures from treasure hunting, to searching for a missing person, to challenging a riddle, to many more unexpected quests. At this point in time, this anime is one for gamers with silly jokes that mostly gamers would find funny. There isn't a whole lot to say about this anime because it was never subbed and there is only 5 english dubbed episodes or subbed, whatever. It's a decent anime, but be warned that finding it is not only difficult but it seems to be only in Japanese and I have yet to find it subtitled and I do not speak it. So, I'd steer clear unless you know japanese. The animation is good and the characters seemed fun, but it wasjust average considering it took most of the fun out of it when there is no place to actually view it in a language you might know ;(

I've watched this during the late 90's and I have to say it's very decent to watch this nowadays if you're looking for a feel-good anime that is focused mainly on adventure and magic. I have a few ups and downs about the series. On the positive note, it has good character development as each adventure gives us a background of at least one of the main characters. Each character is far different from one another and I have personally enjoyed how they compromise and blend in with one another. I cannot say that the art is great, but for an anime that was releasedduring the early 90's, it's not bad at all. The plot is great. Their adventures got me hooked most of the time. If you are looking for a bit of romance, well, I can probably say that there is a bit (and I mean just a bit) of it but do not expect it to go deep. There are a few things missing in this anime. First, it lacked a main plot that can somehow lead us to a deeper story other than their constant travels. There were only 26 episodes so there was probably no opportunity for the producers to do so. The ending was very unsatisfying as well. It didn't give a good closure to the series so I was really left hanging. All in all it was good. It should have been great if they gave a better closure with the anime. It was somehow like Rurouni Kenshin (anime) where it all just ended like that. Nevertheless I can still recommend this for those who have liking on adventure.

I grew up hearing that this show was a worse version of Slayers, and I am here to tell you that is pure slander. They are both mediocre. HOWEVER, this show felt a lot more fun to watch than Slayers for a couple of reasons: firstly, the party is more diverse, being comprised of three humans, one (child) elf, one dog-dragon, one dwarf and one giant. Secondly, it focuses more on short stories (each lasting 1-2 episodes) that often have a comedic aspect to them, and sometimes a very unexpected outcome. The characters have chemistry with each other and all get screen time, with the exception ofKnoll/Noru the giant, who never gets a chance to do much in the entire series. It's a feel good RPG inspired series that will make you laugh at its best and bore you a little at its worst. It's worth watching if you're into retro anime, DnD and RPGs or if you want a fantasy setting anime that is easy to get into (and out of). The reason why I say it's mediocre however, is because despite its decent setting and characters, it never gets into any world building or character development. We learn a few things about the characters, but a LOT is left out. I imagine it's expanded upon in the manga, but I wouldn't know. We never learn how this rag-tag group of friends met each other (except for Clay and Trap, who came from the same town, and Whitey/Shiro, whose backstory is explained in the OVA), and we don't learn what their main goal is, as they just drift from town to town, taking random quests to make money. The show also throws some new characters at you that come from nowhere and immediately become very important to the plot, which makes me think this probably is supposed to be a manga tie-in. Having said all that, I still think it's a good anime worth a watch. Just keep your expectations low.
