Digimon Adventure tri. 4: Soushitsu

The fourth movie of the sequel to our beloved Digimon Adventure franchise sure turned out disappointing. I don't even think at this point that the creators of this movie have any love for this franchise, this is garbage compared to the original seasons. Let me clarify on something; Since when has a rookie level Digimon done anything to a higher level Digimon, in the first episode of Digimon Adventure the whole gang used their rookie level moves on a champion level Kuwagamon with barely any results and now some newborn rookie Digimon pulls out a 10 second stun on a mega level Machinedramon with a bark!? Atthis point I'm just dumbfounded, didn't the team do any research on the material they're working on? Then we have Wargreymon smacking Metalseadramon around in the water? Wait what? Gabumon's breathmove damages Metalseadramon's chromedigizoid head with more results than any we've seen before? I could go on but you all get the point, this is beyond ridiculous. What's with this BDSM molesting Gennai, this is exactly what a major antagonist should not be, who thought this was a remotely good idea? Only thing missing would be Gennai in his oldman form and the whole scene would've been crowned. As always I do appreciate good fight animations, even though I can't get around the 3 megas needed to beat 1 mega thing. Soundwise, same old Digimon greatness. The new ending song "keep on" by Ai Maeda is a blast to the past for most oldschool fans and I bet many appreciate it, like I did, amazing song and well done remix. As for characters I'm still an avid hater of the Mei-Mei duo. To be honest at this point I'm starting to think the only good thing going for Meiko is her stockings. The relationship between Biyomon and Sora was interesting and probably the best thing in this movie character developmentwise. As a very big fan of Digimon I had high hopes for this movie after the strong way the third movie ended, but man, was I disappointed, the rest of the Chosen Children pulling mega evolutions left and right without any build up, I can't even fathom what they were thinking. So disappointing.

So here we go...after a long await that is. Story, since this continues off from the previous movies, I'm basing this off as a "per movie" ideal instead. I've enjoyed how Sora and Piyomon's relation came out in the end so I'd say this bit would be at least an 8 or 8.5, however there was quite the confusion and errors unfortunately making it at least a 6. Especially how Salamon can land a stun (lol). Also there was one moment with Sora with Gennai that made me laugh tremendously but that wasn't entirely necessary at all sadly. So I want to say, story wise, 7in general with some doubts on some parts. Art, by default in my aspect is 8, and it was very smooth so nonetheless, solid 8. Sound, also like art, nothing has changed much but fitting to the scenes, so by my standard, a 7. Character, oh boy. After the introduction from this movie, everything came to piece (except there's still a wonder about the other S2 Digidestined as briefly shown). I gave this a 7 with consideration of Sora and Piyomon's part. However Hime's factor so far, I must say "what did one expect of a reboot?", especially as an adult she is. Surprisingly, Meiko's change did slightly boost my opinion on her for the better. And I was a bit awed with our stereotypical Taichi and Yamamoto bit with their partners under the sea moment, even with the reboot the bond was still intact, I'd like to give this part an 8. With all these factors, I have to say it was a 7 though. Enjoyment, I've literally enjoyed this without thinking whatsoever, there was some emotional parts and funny bits, and surprisingly a 180 degree change on the entire franchise name (as a childhood series lol if you know what I mean). I've never regret watching all the parts so far even this one, I've enjoyed it and I did love it a lot. After all, this is what enjoyment means. Overall, I would say a solid 8 with everything tying in together, and if you're out for the "perfect" title, this isn't the right one but if you're in for the enjoyment as I am, it should be decent and fair enough.

It has been a long wait since the third film of the Digimon Adventure tri. Franchise, Kokuhaku, has aired. As it ended on a cliffhanger, many Digimon fans could not wait to see what would happen next. Unfortunately, Soushitsu, the long-awaited fourth film, does not fulfil all expectations satisfyingly. At its beginning, the film expands on concepts of the TV series and becomes very emotional while explaining the motives for the actions of a certain character. It manages to build onto loose ends without disturbing the continuity of previous instalments. As great as these few scenes may be, this high quality introduction unfortunately is the climaxof the film and the following story lacks in comparison. However, in no way is this supposed to imply the film becomes weak right away. Especially in the first quarter, there are numerous enjoyable character interactions which not only are nostalgic but also funny and charming. In general, the comedy in this film is superior to the others’ and even though the situation the children are in is much more dangerous than it was before, the humour does not feel off at any time. Sadly, the story progresses unfavourably as some events are unnecessary. They seem to only exist for the sake of fan service and while this is not inevitably a bad trait for a film, it does not contribute to anything in this case. Not much else can be said about the story this time as not much happens. Soushitsu’s first half is primarily for character interactions while the second has a few fights and relatively many evolution sequences. There is a lack of action scenes but the few that do exist are animated massively better than those in the previous films. Due to what occurred in Kokuhaku, we are able to see some child level Digimon action and even though the power levels seem a bit unbelievable and odd at times, the enjoyment makes it absolutely excusable. Moreover, the children are actually fighting as well, but not in an unrealistic manner such as Masaru from Digimon Savers. Soushitsu is supposed to focus on Sora and Piyomon. However, it does so unsatisfactorily. While it is commendable that the development of other characters is not neglected, Sora’s and Piyomon’s feels forced and out of place. Piyomon does not act like it was before and while it is obvious that it is confused due to the events in the previous film, it does not explain the behaviour towards its partner. Their story concludes tolerably but, at the same time, predictably and generic. Luckily, the other children and Digimon do not suffer from the same issue and are relatable as ever. Compared to the other tri films, this is the weakest. It was not inherently awful but many events would have been much more satisfactory had they been handled differently – this especially applies to the end. That being said, I did enjoy Soushitsu a lot and even though it did have weaknesses, I do believe that the last two films are able to be of the same quality as the other three again.

Look. At the start of this movie, we are three episodes into this series and the only constants have been bad animation, raising a million questions per film, and not answering any questions. At the very least, the movies before this one had positives like decent character development and some OK action. This movie doesn't. Instead, it doubled down on all those bad aspects. Animation: The *vast majority* of the movie is static shots or one character moving a little bit per cut. This is not film caliber animation. It's barely TV quality. There is a scene at the end where they have like five minutesof b roll digivolutions just to show us a 30 second fight in which none of the Ultimate forms are even spotlighted properly. Raising Questions: This a fourth movie and they are still introducing us to brand new characters like Hackmon and introducing brand new backstory like Hanekawa's Digimon. And the fact that the Gennai we've seen isn't even the same Gennai from the series. None of this makes sense or has built naturally from previous movies. It's all meaningless if all of this is shown to us without explanations or even reasons why these facts matter. Not Answering Questions: The *third* movie finally gave us *some* insight into what the overall plot of this series was going to be about. The DigiDestined going to the Digital World to find their Digimon and stop the cause of the Infected Digimon. The Infected Digimon are never mentioned. They find their Digimon immediately. On top of that, none of the new material was properly explained, either. On top of *that*, not much at all happens. They don't even leave the beach and decide what to do for more than the first fourth. On top of THAT, the movie ends IN THE MIDDLE OF A SCENE. There is no sense of purpose or conclusiveness to any of this. This is the fourth movie in a series. If they couldn't turn those problems around here, they are never going to be able to turn this around. And they didn't. Not only have they produced the worst Digimon tri movie yet, they have produced an insult to all of us who have stuck with the series in spite of its problems.
