Today's Menu for the Emiya Family
衛宮さんちの今日のごはん
With the threat of the Holy Grail War no longer looming over Fuyuki City, its inhabitants can finally enjoy a time of peace. Now that all of the Masters and Servants have adjusted to their new mundane lives, Shirou has taken it upon himself to cook for his household and show Saber the wonders of modern cuisine. Every day, he ventures into the marketplace to see what kind of different meals he can cook up with unique ingredients and a limited budget. However, his legendary skills often attract uninvited guests from all over the city, so there is never a dull moment at dinner with the Emiya family. As his guests entertain themselves in the living room, Shirou walks through the step-by-step process of creating some of his favorite meals. With delicacies such as his savory New Year soba with shrimp tempura, steamy foil-baked salmon, and cheesy bamboo shoot gratin, everything is up for grabs on his menu. Itadakimasu! Forget Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, this is the canon Fate to me. Seeing all the characters interact with each other instead of killing one another is a breath of fresh air for me. There's not much story going on but it's the typical Slice of Life anime. The art is OK at best (Except episode 7, the volleyball scene is a 10/10 for me lol) the music is soothing to hear especially the ending theme. The characters are veeeery different than their usual selfs and that's a good thing, seeing them get along so well is satisfying. Overall i reaally like this spin-off, seeing everybody eat andenjoy themselves are a treat for anyone that feels depressed by the main Fate story 8/10

This is the show I didn't know I needed until I watched it, and by the end I was so moved I had to write a review. My personal alternative titles for this show include Fate Cooking Instructions, Fate Friendship, Fate Foodie and Fate Feewings (or Fate Feels). Story - 9/10 This is a light slice of life view of the Fate Universe in which the characters are going about daily life without the drama of fighting the holy grail war. What we learn is Shiro's household has a hotel bed sheet type laundry regimen (they do sheets daily, I swear) and they must have thecleanest sheets in the city. They shop for food almost daily, and school kids run on their stomachs. Frankly I loved how fluffy this series is as there's enough drama/angst in the other Fate series so watching them bond over various food is a real treat. This series is probably the best cooking instructions anime I've watched, and that's saying a lot because I'm a big anime food show watcher and Fate Foodie definitely satisfied it. Animation - 8/10 It's water color style, more relaxed but not very crisp in detail. The characters, locations and food are easily recognizable, but this isn't anywhere near to top notch animation. Sound - 9/10 The sound design fit the scenes, in particular the sizzling oil sounds, boiling sounds and chopping sounds are accurate. The rest of the soundtrack is also good and the bouncy opening theme's last word is the very appropriate Itadakimasu (I humbly receive the food, or Let's eat), which is the perfect way to set the stage for each episode. Characters - 9/10 I particularly love this series because the characters aren't trying to kill each other, hence my other title Fate Friendship. Each reveals a different aspect of themselves. Lancer is the ultimate part time job guy. I'd hire him in a heart beat, this guy can do nearly every job except cooking. Emiya is the ultimate cook. Rider has superior car handling skills. Caster shows her waifu side. Assassin loves sandwiches. Rin makes a great fried rice. Illya likes building snow men with Hercules. So much fluffy, heartwarming feelings, so Fate Feewings. UwU. Enjoyment - 10/10 I love food anime and this is as good as it gets. As someone who is quite a good cook, the cooking instructions are summarized but fairly accurate. I learned a few new things and I'm going to try the simpler recipes as I realize I have most of those ingredients at home. Watching it made me hungry. The entire message of bonding over good food with your family and friends just resonated with me, especially after Saber's speech in the last episode. After all the horrible things that happened in the rest of the Fate Series, this was so refreshing and wonderful I wish it would go on forever. If they released 50 more episodes I would happily watch them all. I loved this series. It moved me. Recommendations Note: While this show has excellent cooking instructions and authentic food, it does rely on some knowledge of the Fate/Stay night universe (stay/night, unlimited blade works) in order to understand the background and how the characters relate to and interact with each other. Having some history will exponentially increase your pleasure in watching this series as the emotional bits will have greater impact.

I didn't think I would enjoy it so much. Todays Menu for the Emiya Family is exactly the opposite tone of the main timeline series, and yet captures a unique element that those don't elaborate on, and that is relationships. During each of these short episodes, we see different characters showing aspects of their bonds that add to the depth of their character as a whole. Some of these include the wife and husband duo of Caster and Kuzuki, the backstory of Taiga and Shirou's bond, and a glimpse at what Sakura and Rin had before the former's tragic fate. The art of the showis low budget of course, but has a certain charm to it. The music was stellar, and was pretty soothing. Really the only complaint I have was the music choice not fitting the show at some points. Overall, an amazing show that all fate/type moon fans should definitely watch.

Ahahaha, it's the fate cast, but it's a cooking show! Why do people make this! Why is it so good! :D It's so sweet! And that's not a pun! Watching any 10-minute episode just brushes a smile on anyone's face. It's so lovely seeing the characters interact as friends, going grocery shopping, preparing for a festival, or going to the swimming pool. Everything is wonderful and happy and blissful! Shirou is such a cooking boss! But we also get guest stars such as Archer and Rin; and we get to experience some other cast members that dearly needed more screentime in the main plot. There's a lot ofcooking, neat music, great visuals, Shirou explains it all; it looks delicious, and you may even be able to learn something from the master chef himself! It's fate characters cooking, eating, and interacting. It's simple, and it's perfect. :3

Ah, the Fate franchise. One of anime’s most respected, extensive, yet oddly superfluous multiverses. Admittedly, I’ve only seen Ufotable’s now iconic translation of the main storyline (Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works) in what has become a sprawling universe of near-infinite possibility, so I have certainly no right to comment on the overall quality of any of the many, many, many spin-offs. But I can’t help but wonder; how necessary, really, is all of this? The main plot of an urban fantasy wizard death game with magical, anime-ized takes on classic figures of myth and history is a spectacular idea, and the story both of ShiroEmiya and his father as they try to maintain their morals in the midst of a chaotic, swirling mass of conflict and death is simultaneously both a better Chirsopher Nolan philosophical potboiler and a better Zach Snyder mythic spectacle than either of those filmmakers have ever actually achieved. And the framework lends itself well to repetition, seeing what new familiar public-domain entities we can transform into magic-wielding badasses to duke it out in underlit streets and abandoned buildings. But Jesus, how fucking many of these things do we need? How many additions have there been to the lore and characters that just spread further and further outward like puke on the pavement until the excellent ideas and craft at the core are buried under infinite mounds of mediocrity and superfluity? Say what you want about the MCU, at least the vast majority of its properties are incredibly well-received by critics and audiences alike. Well, perhaps I’ll change my tune on the subject if and when I finally start diving into the endless world of Fate spinoffs myself. Sadly, if Today’s Meal for the Emiya Family is any indication, I’m not sure how likely that possibility is. I don’t want to be too harsh on Today’s Meal for the Emiya Family- or, as it will be henceforth known, Food/Stay Night- because there’s not really anything to hate here. It’s a light, inoffensive side thing that exists for a very specific purpose and not much else. Based on a spinoff manga, it takes place in a version of the main timeline where the combatants in the war for the Holy Grail have all settled down, stopped fighting, and pretty much just become slightly annoying neighbors to each other. And the show is a series of short, 12-minute vignettes focused on Shiro’s occasionally-mentiond-in-the-OG-text passion for cooking, as he cooks up a variety of meals across the year, inviting a rotating selection of the Stay Night cast to com eat with him. So yeah, it’s essentially a cooking show featuring the Nasuverse mainstays, a food porn diversion that also doubles as Fate fanservice of seeing all your favorite characters just hang out without the stress of a war hanging over their heads, interacting in low-key stakes and bouncing their personalities off each other. That’s all it’s really here to do, so again, there’s not really any reason to get annoyed at it. I guess my indifference toward Food/Stay Night comes from just how bare bones it is. There really is nothing more to it than Barefoot Contessa with Shiro Emiya, nothing else of substance to hang onto or invest your attention in. The pacing is slow and aimless, with oddly long pauses in the middle of conversations and fairly milquetoast dialogue. The animation is nice and fluffy, refitting the harsh atmosphere and character designs of the show proper into a warmer slice-of-life atmosphere, but it's not unique enough to be a draw on its own. If you're not already super-invested in the lives of these characters, it has nothing to offer you. And while the Fate universe does have a lot of really great characters, I find that their incarnations here feel unnecessarily bland. Everyone's just so nice and toothless and standard, and while I am a noted defender of nice and toothless storytelling, I find myself missing these character's more engaging edges. I miss Shiro's dorky intensity, Saber's stoic compassion, Sakura's slight lilt of pain, Caster's quiet despair, Ilya's creepy kid shtick. The only two characters who survive this sandblasting unscathed are Lancer, who's bro-y demeanor has always lent itself well to low-key comedy, and Rin Tohsaka, further convincing me that she's the best character in the whole damn franchise. Seriously, her spunk and take-charge attitude is an absolute delight, and the episodes where she takes the spotlight are easily the best episodes of the bunch. Perhaps it does come down to preference here. By now, the Fate franchise has grown so far beyond the confines of its original interpretation that assigning it to just one role may be too limiting. And it would be foolish to dismiss any new endeavor just because it doesn't suit what *I* think of as Fate. But Food/Stay Night is just too inconsequential, albeit pleasant enough in the moment, to stake much of an opinion on either way. It's a wispy, harmless spinoff that fans will enjoy and no one else will get much out of.
