Anyone who even has a passing knowledge of Gundam can tell you that it is a big series. While it can seem daunting, people who want to get into it can take solace in the fact that given the number of entries, there’s a show for everyone. If you’re like me and enjoy dark and gritty stories, you can watch Zeta Gundam, Victory Gundam, or Iron-Blooded Orphans. If you want something more lighthearted, you may be inclined to watch something such as ZZ or Build Fighters. Gundam Build Divers is definitely more on the lighthearted spectrum. As someone who’s favorite Gundam shows are the three aforementioned“dark” entries, you might be inclined to believe that I’d write off this show without giving it a chance. While it’s true that this type of Gundam show is somewhat alien to me, I was willing to give it a chance, and if it had many merits, I’d love it, lighthearted or no. Gundam Build Divers is centered around Gundam Build Nexus - an MMORPG based around Gunpla. The main characters frequent the real-life Odaiba Gundam Base (most notable for its Gundam Unicorn Statue). This was by far my biggest draw to the show. As a big Gundam fan, the concept of a Gundam MMO proved fun to think about. The possibilities are endless. Gundam Build Divers’ cameos were great as well. If you’re a fan of Gundam, you’ll be sure to see a reference to series you love. They even paid tribute to the box art for the Linkin Park Gundam! So, besides fanservice, what does Gundam Build Divers bring to the table? Not much, unfortunately. The very thing I praised the show for, its setting, is one of the biggest things that annoyed me. Maybe Recovery of an MMO Junkie spoiled me, but GBN often doesn’t feel like a game. While it can be forgiven in that it’s a VR game, it’s still ridiculous for characters to act hurt or hungry, only to remember that they’re in a video game (multiple times). GBN murders any tension the show tries to foster. Because GBN is a game, there aren’t any real stakes, so it was hard for me to get invested. Game concepts aren’t brought up nearly enough, and thus, while more than an afterthought, it felt like GBN was deemed not worthy of exploring. What does Build Divers deem worthy of exploring, you ask? The characters. Unfortunately, they’re still explored about as well as other galaxies. The story primarily follows Riku, the blandest Gundam protagonist I’ve had the displeasure of following. He’s pretty much your generic middle-school shounen protagonist who converts friendship into the energy needed to tear through each and every obstacle that has the misfortune of being in his way. The shrivel of tension that exists in the show is brutalized by Riku, who, past the intro episodes, becomes a nigh-unstoppable force, making the show quite boring. It’s a bad sign that, more often than not, I was rooting for Riku to get his just-desserts. I came to roll my eyes whenever a character spoke of a low success rate, because I knew Riku would pull through all the same. It was extremely unrealistic to see Riku, a total newbie, absolutely brutalize most of his competition. And if you thought Riku was too bland, Build Divers has you covered with Sarah - a mysterious girl whose sole purpose in this anime is to stand around looking cute. The less I talk about Sarah, the better. The other characters don’t add much, though a lot of them do end up being more enjoyable than the main bunch. Though I must say, as far as the main group go, Ayame is a saving grace. Again, battles aren’t that important in Gundam Build Divers. Sure, characters like to do battle, but nothing is really at stake with losing. While some of the Gunpla look quite cool, a lot of the battles lacked a certain “umph,” for a lack of a better term. My favorite challenges were actually the capture the flag events, probably because they added something new to the mix. The ending of the show has a really nice one, but it’s too little too late. I wanted to like this show, especially since I began it with a friend, yet it didn’t do anything for me. It was hard to drag myself to watch another episode, and it felt like a chore. I didn’t really find the show funny, I didn’t find the action exciting, the characters were boring, and the story was anything but gripping. The only saving grace was - due to being a glorified commercial - the copious amount of fanservice, but even if you’re a Gundam show, it’s not really worth the watch. Suffice to say, while I’m wary about calling the show terrible, it was quite mediocre.

Before going into this show know that it isn't connected to the other build series of Gundam, and should be treated as a standalone separate series. This show was genuinely an emotional rollercoaster for me, even if major plot points were foreshadowed from the very start and the logic to do with a game world reaches SAO tier of unrealistic, it still managed to bring me to tears. The last 5 episodes, the climax of the story and the payoff at the end were moving and is the best finale of anything I've seen in a long time. It is an emotional tale of thelove people have for their game, and a community coming together to make the impossible possible. The characters are all very interesting and have many different dynamics with each other. The battles are all varied and interesting and have so much freedom due to it being set in a game world. I can understand why fellow hardcore Gundam fans dislike it. It really goes completely off the usual Gundam formula, and even very different to the Build Fighters and Build Fighters Tri formulas. But trust me the payoff, everything coming together, and everyone coming together, was worth it and gives on of the most moving and exciting endings I could have asked for. Please, give it a go. You won't regret it. Yes, it's no space politics, it's no space terrorists, it's characters are younger, but that doesn't make the story any less moving or enjoyable. It's worth the ride.

even though its different from the traditional gundam series it does show what would it be like if you ever wanted to actually pilot a mobile suit but its in a virtual world much like build fighters its shows the many types of custom made mobile suits that fans of building gunpla or watching the gundam series of old can either recognize of expect to see plus it has its funny moments and true story when i decided to continue my hobby of building gunpla when i built the gundam barbatos lupus from iron blooded orphans the second kit i built was from this seriesand after i built it i watched this series and buit more gunpla both from this series and from other series as well i can see why some fans who grew up with the gunpla series has some mixed feelings about this series but to me this a very good series and maybe doesn't deserve the hate that it gets.

Just so you know. This series has no connection whatsoever with the previous two Gundam Build Series. I have watched all the episodes and there is not even one reference or returning character from the previous series. So despite it being called "Gundam Build" it really is a standalone anime. Story: 6/10 The story is pretty basic. Riku tries out GBN a virtual world of Gundam and meets a mysterious person named Sarah and they decide to go on adventures in the world of GBN. The first couple of episodes are mostly explanation of the world and small events within the world. Throughout the first half theydo build up a villain and characters get certain arcs to them. It isn't anything new but they do it really well. The second half contains a little bit more events but it honestly gets really ridiculous in the second half and over the top. A good first half but a really over dramatic second half Art: 7/10 The design of the gundams, environment and characters are very nice. There is also not a lot of CGI in this anime so the animation of Gundams don't look to outta place. Sound: 7/10 The music and sound effects are done really good as well. The openings and endings are actually pretty good too. The soundtrack does the job very well and fits the situation perfectly. Character: 8/10 The characters are pretty stereotypical or generic as some would say but when they are as likeable as Riku and friends it is really hard to hate them. Throughout the series Riku develops in some form and some side characters even get their own development e.g. Yukio, Kouichi and Ayame. Ayame especially is a very good character with a proper arc in the series. She is probably the best character in this series. Enjoyment: 7/10 Despite not being a huge Gundam fan and disappointed at how this isn't a sequel to the previous two gundam build series. The series is still very enjoyable and you will most likely have a pretty good time with the series. Overall: 6/10

Ever since Gundam Build Fighters ended, I was enjoyed from beginning to end. But when I watched Tri, I was very disappointed and I dropped it half-way because that show was really bad. When Divers was announced, I was skeptical about this new show, but when I watch it, it feels like a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed it. Let's see if I can sum it up... Story: The story is like your standard typical anime; the MC enters a VR world, the villain plans to take over the VR world, and it's up to the heroes to save the world from the forces ofevil. Pretty straightforward. And to be honest, the 1st half of the anime was kinda enjoyable where as the 2nd half of the anime gets convoluted with plot holes, plot armor, so many fillers, and an arc that is very unnecessary. Overall, I didn't enjoy the 2nd half, but I do liked the 1st half. Art: The art in this show is very good for the most part. So many detail on the Gundams, the colorful world, and the world building is fantastic. Sunrise Studio knows how to make good animation. Sound: I didn't bother with the sound because I really have no idea to talk about it. Characters: As for characters. The primary characters, including the MC, for the most part, decent. Riku is a good character to a certain point of the anime. The 1st half make me like him because he is relatable character that you you wanna jump into the world and experience it yourself. But when the second half hits, it made me not like that character anymore. As for the side characters that is with Riku, I have mixed feelings. Yukio is a good support character and he's a good range fighter. As for Momoka, I just didn't like her for the most part of the show. She's very annoying and picked one of the most stupidest Gundam in the entire show. What character I hate the most is Sarah. She is nothing but a plot device and she does absolutely nothing for the majority of the show. There is 2 more characters that joined Riku's team, but I do have to admit, both of them did nothing to impact the plot. The 1st one was Kouichi, and he was...ok at the most part, but the 2nd one, Nanami, teamed up with them very late of the show that she is unneeded but appeared because of fanservice. The villain on the other hand is actually a good villain that I actually want to support and see them succeed instead of the heroes where he has a relatable motive and has one of the most badass Gundam in the entire series. As for the support characters, I actually enjoyed them more than the MC that I wished they would've given more spotlight. Magee, Tigerwolf, and Shahryar are the type of characters that you want to hug them, mostly Tigerwolf with his outgoing personality, unique character design, and a guy that I would love to team up with. They would ever make a spin off that would focus on those characters, I will watch it. What shines this show the most is Ayame as she is one of the most likable and best girl in the entire show. I think both Ayame and Tigerwolf are characters that I deeply enjoyed the most. Overall: All I can is, that I hate to admit, It's better than Tri, but not great than the OG Build Fighters. If they were to make season 2 or make a spin off that focuses on the 3 I mentioned, I would watch it. But still, I enjoyed Divers from beginning to end, despite its flaws.
