Galaxy Angel

This is a silly comedy, as such it should be reviewed like that and this review will do just that. A lot of people (here on MAL at least) seem to give Galxy Angel a low score due to it's "lack of a story and plot". This is true, as far as the show goes, there is no actual plot or red-thread that the story follows. The main element and driving force behind the show is the characters, who's mision is to search for items and things called Lost Technology, ancient things of power from the past (obviously). Here follows the difference in my own reviewfrom most others: While Galaxy Angel does indeed not have a plot or any real storyline, but that's alright, it's actually fine. The show is a silly, cutesy-tootsie anime with five girls as the main characters, each with their own (perhaps a bit preditacble and stereotpyical) personalities and tastes. Their inter-group relationship may seem friendly and so at first glance, but if you have some intuition and actually pay attention, you can notice a lot of interesting, underlying rivarly and other goodies. The show has a very silly and exaggerated comedy-aspect and many of the jokes have been used before and probably better, still, there are parts of the show that *will* make you laugh. What can you say about the sound, music and art then? You can't complain, there are shows out there who have far worse and the style fits perfectly with the show's theme of silly, easy-going comedy. Some might like the songs and soundtrack enough to actually buy the OST, gods know that the opening theme is so darn catchy, I still catch myself humming it occasionally. Which also brings to another good point, the OP is absolutely hilarious, it's so incoherent and stupid that if you don't crack a smile there's something seriously wrong with you (or you got a twig stuck up your butt). Story? There's no story, there's a plot element: They are searching for Lost Technology but more oft than not they end up doing and getting into situations that have absolutely nothing to do with it at all. The characters consist of a gun-tooting tomboy with an overly large bust, a beautiful and flirtatious martial-artist, a kind-hearted and lucky dim-wit, a mature yet slightly mean loli-figure and of course, the token silent-girl who seems to be some sort of creepy pseudo-monk who worships a really strange, rotating device in her room (It's awesome!). All in all, a lot of people unfairly rate Galaxy Angel for it's plotless and senseless story, but I really don't think that's the major problem. The show is a silly, exaggerated comedy and you can't really expect any high-rate scripts and well-written stories for those, now can you? Give it a try if you're looking for a good laugh and some minutes of enjoyment. Each episode is only 15 minutes anyway so you could easily finish all, or half, the series in just one go if you'd like. I certainly recommend this show and it was actually so enjoyable that I'll go on to watch all the other seasons as well, just for the laughs.

Galaxy Angel has an unusual history. From the research I did, it seems that the anime was created to advertise a virtually simultaneous game release. Both from Broccoli entertainment. There was just one issue, the game got delayed, the anime didn't and the anime staff didn't have any information about the game except for the character designs and a few basic character traits. So they decided to just forget about the dating sim continuity and just do whatever they wanted with it. The end result was that the anime and game became set in alternate universes. How did that work out? Let's take a lookat the original anime and find out. Galaxy Angel quickly abandons even the pretense of a story. After the first three episodes you can watch the rest in any order and not have any problems. The setting is that a group of five girls go on bizarre military missions, hilarity ensues. Is the anime funny? Very much so. It has a very fast-paced, zany type of humour. It's used to great effect in virtually all of the episodes. The only exception is episode 14 which is inexplicably serious. I don't know what they were thinking with that one. It doesn't make sense to have a serious episode in an absurdest comedy series. It would be like having a random comedic episode in the middle of Berserk. That aside, the situations are creative and they're used to great effect. The characters are a quirky group with a lot of energy and they interact well with each other. The cast isn't complex but they are charming and a great deal of fun. You could say that they're a microcosm of what to expect from the entire series. The art is good. There are a lot of impressive details in the various objects that the characters encounter, the backgrounds and backdrops are lively. The art is also the only indication that you get that the characters come from a dating sim. The characters have interesting looks but there's also some fan-service, albeit not much. The voice acting is well done. Yamaguchi Megumi, Sawashiro Miyuki, Tamura Yukari and Shintani Ryoko all do really well in their roles. The entire cast exaggerates at times, but they also use subtlety quite a bit, certainly more than I expected from a zany comedy, and it works to accentuate certain scenes and downplay others which actually strengthens those moments where things go from mildly to insanely zany. Like the series, the music is high energy, nonsensical and fun. The yuri factor is a 3/10. There are some slightly homo-erotic moments, most of them involving the boy crazy Ranpha oddly enough, but, like everything else in the series, they don't go anywhere. There also aren't enough to establish a pattern. My final rating for Galaxy Angel is an 8/10. It's a great series. It may not be complex or have a story, but it does have a lot of high energy, creative comedy. It's a series that knows what it wants to do and runs with it. If you want a good laugh you really can't go wrong with Galaxy Angel. Just skip the fourteenth episode.

I actually watched some episodes of Galaxy Angel before but with Japanese dub, and this time I decided to watch it with English dub. Wrong decision. I’ll expound on that later. I don’t know if it’s the case with the dub, but I think I liked it better before. It may have been the lack of other anime back at the time I first watched it, or my taste in anime now and then. This time I don’t seem to like it because compared to all the other series I have watched so far, it’s not that good. It’s just another anime that has nospecific plot – Well actually it does. They were looking for this lost technology thing, but they seem to have forgotten that and pursued odd jobs instead, giving me some few laughs now and then, but I still found the storylines to be a bit mediocre and too easy to understand (FYI my mind can take on something more complex). It’s just another cutesy anime. Despite the use of mecha, it’s not really a mecha anime, and definitely didn’t look like it was from Bandai.. I did like the fact that it was short and sweet. I have to admit that I have a short attention span, so the 15 minutes per episode was a plus. What I didn’t like it (among the other things I didn’t really like about this anime) was that the plot wasn’t developed well. You’d think the last episodes would improve a bit, but it really didn’t. They were similar to all the other episodes, except maybe that fake Milfeulle episode. The characters were okay. Milfeulle, Mint and Vanilla were cutesy and Ranpha and Forte were fan service friendly. It’s another group of girls that have different personalities and yet, goes well together. You have lucky but dim Milfeulle, Mint the 30 year old stuck in a 10 year old’s body, Vanilla who’s a pseudo-nun/monk of some sort, flirtatious Ranpha and the loud and tomboyish Forte. Yep. Definitely can see the chemistry in that. The voice acting was probably the element that hindered me from liking it as much as I used to. I’ll commend the fact that the English translators tried to add some spice to the dialogue but it still came up short. The voices matched the characters, but something was off – can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was the fact that sometimes, their voices lacked emotion. The music fit the anime really well. The opening, ending themes and even the BGM. They were all cutesy, like the anime. I don’t think the lyrics really made sense (what the heck does C.Q, C.Q mean?) but it was cutesy nonetheless. Truth be told I’m a bit disappointed, since usually after re-watching series I walk away even more satisfied than before, like when I rewatched Yu Yu Hakusho and Fushigi Yuugi. I thought I was going to at least like it as much as before, but I ended up liking it less. Maybe I’ll try re-watching it again, this time with the Japanese dub.

I'm talking about the series as a whole and not just the first seasons. It might seem long but by the end you'll wish there was more. Some of the dumbest stuff you'll ever see and some of the most advanced comedy you'll ever see. Everything in between. This is a skit show, episodes don't necessarily rely on the content or canon of preceding episodes. There's sitcom style stuff, plenty of parody, occasionally completely serious episodes that remind me of Ghost in the Shell, and episodes that defy any form of categorization. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in my life came out ofthis series. Jokes so sophisticated I can't comprehend how they were written. And of course gags on-tier with the good ol' banana peel, never fails. All of the characters are good. Even the ones with hideously monstrous breasts. Really rare for a comedy series for me to like all of the characters, which is important as this show is primarily character based comedy. If you don't like cute girls or comedy(freak) then I don't know why you're even on this page get out of here. Otherwise you should love this series. Normad is my self-insert
