Levius -レビウス-
As society rises from the ashes of war, cybernetically augmented arena fighters battle for fame and fortune... or die trying. It's the 19th century, and the world has entered the Era of Rebirth, recovering from the devastating flames of war. The sport of mechanical martial arts has galvanized the nations. Cybernetically augmented fighters turn their blood into steam and their bodies into brutal fighting—and killing—machines. Young Levius is one of those arena battlers, hell-bent on winning in order to simply survive. (Source: VIZ Media)

This is one of those short anime that kept me glued to the screen. The story made me feel for the characters, and whoever practiced any sort of combat sports knows about the feelings portrayed in the anime: comradery, the will to keep pushing and becoming better. I see that a lot of reviewers disliked the CGI and the story. The art was amazing and so was the story in my opinion. Hating CGI anime solely for the sake of agreeing with the status quo, that's just snobbism, and a poor attempt of achieving elitism. Mediocre anime? The reviews do not do it justice. If you like anime like Baki, or Kengan Ashura, this one is a nice touch, with steam-punk like cyborg boxing campaign, the premise is pretty wacky but then again, so are most anime. I loved it, and I think you will love it too.

I saw Baki and saw Kengan, but now after seeing Levius. I can only say that it has been a wonder, as much as the story as to the quality of everything. Just check it to the end, its going to my top fav Shows and this is not a joke, we need more animes like that, Megalobox is the same wonderful anime that we need. Characters: 10/10 Audio: 10/10 CGI: 10/10 Overall: 10/10The only bad thing its we can't enjoy more than 12 chapters. A trully amazing show. I hope we get a second season from the manga, i will be dreaming till this day.

Despite the CGI, the action of this show was actually interesting to watch, the fights were well build and had some basic to relentless strategy on it, although sometimes the scenes had some obvious low framerates and static/repetitive characters in the background, but no big deal. As for the story, it seems decent, although it wont explore clearly the main characters intention and their reason to engage in fights from the beggining, which is kind good and bad at the same time, since it creates some environment of mistery while also kind of make hard to relate with them until later on, specifically Levius due tohis silent archetype and lack of expression, although such character construction suits his tragic past/trauma. The opponent characters were ok, but ironically kind falling behind due to the fast progression in their story. Still the characters animation actually seems very lively (taking in consideration it's CGI). Overall, I'd give it 8, because despite a few flaws it have, I'm actually a fan of fighting genre and also due to the fact that this anime made me aware about it source, the manga, which was totally off my radar and I'm glad to learn about that excelent piece of art. I surely wasn't expecting this show, but I'm glad it came. Hope for a second season with all the covered aspects upgraded.

So what is Levius? Levius is a cyber punk story,in which the handsome young protagonist Levius is a boxer. The CGI is actually really good considered that japan usually sucks at it, not as good as disneys or pixars CGI. The soundtrack is really good honestly, very fitting for the atmosphere. OP and ED were ultimatly forgetable. The characters are OK, nothing world shattering that hasn't been done before. My main crtisism is, that the anime doesn't have a clear message, like is capitalism bad? Is war bad? We are told that Levius searched something in fighting, this question is answered, however it isn't answered in satisfactory way. Besides this he does far more for essantially strangers then one can reasonably expect from a normal human being. But all in all it was fun to watch, if you don't want to think to much for a few hours then go for it.

PSA: Before people make an uninformed claim that this series is a knock-off of Megalo Box (I did thought it was at first); please realize that the manga of this series was made 6 years before Megalo Box's manga - It's just that it took 8 years for the anime adaptation to be released in comparison to nearly half a year for the anime adaptation of Megalo Box to be released. I did however, watch Megalo Box before watching this and I can confidently claim that I enjoyed this series a bit more than Megalo Box - Megalo Box was amazing in its own waybut in terms of plot structure and character I found this series more interesting. Now let's get into the review! Mild Spoilers Plot: MC is a first-hand victim of the wrath of war after witnessing a local individual being taken away, he then sees the same individual approach an arena housing a particular contact sport known in the series universe as metal boxing (which is essentially prosthetic-aided boxing) I think the MC wanted to compete in this sport to attract the individual but it had an interesting plot twist near the halfway point of the series. For a general anime, the plot seems more on the generic indifferent in terms of structure considering we are thrust in with almost every important character in the series as well a bout where MC shows off his ace move. Despite this, the plot seems to move in a fairly linear turn of events but still refers to previous events and characters in order to progress instead of using bouts and wins or losses to achieve the same outcome. As such, I'll be giving this series a fair 7/10 in terms of plot and narrative structure. Art & Sound: The main music that plays behind key events in the series is fairly suitable and easy to consume along with the fairly refined CGI animation. I'm quite familiar with Polygon Pictures and their recent pieces but I feel this is one of the better animation and detailed CGI series to date, the style mimics 2D anime art styles while maintaining the 3D perception of depth which made me fall in love with it with the first action scene - That and there are nice quick action scenes during Levius' bouts with opponents. Overall in terms of Art & Sound, I'd rate it 8/10 One of Polygon Picture's better series. Character: MC's character rarely develops, he still maintains his near stagnant emotions as he fights or converses with other characters. I feel that the most developed character in the series was either Levius' uncle or the blonde character considering they're the most invested in Levius' feelings. They also get extremely emotional toward the end and make a few sacrifices which I don't know if they'd do in the beginning - However, it was interesting to see most of the past characters still contributing to MC's development as a character, especially Malcom who retired after losing and continues charity work. I'd rate character a solid 8/10, character development can be seen throughout the series but there aren't much scenes that can support in depth development across the 12 episodes. Enjoyment: I began this series Last Night and have just finished it now, I'd say I watched 7 epiosdes of this series in one sitting and I've got school tomorrow. That is exactly how invested I became with this series, I initially rated the series an 8/10 which bumped up to 9/10 around episode 5 but finally settling down with the series after finishing it allows me to revise the previous events in the story and judge based on entertainment. I now prefer the initial rating because the story line slips a bit at the end and wasn't as entertaining to watch for me; maybe they were trying to add a cliffhanger for another season but I'm sure a better cliffhanger would make the ending enjoyable.
