Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2205
宇宙戦艦ヤマト2205 新たなる旅立ち
Gamilans are facing their biggest hurdle yet: their planet is dying at an alarming pace. To save his people and relocate them to habitable land, Aberdt Desler feigns submission to the oppressive rule of the planet Galman, which houses a race almost identical to the Gamilans. Desler's true objective is to seize control and accelerate the salvation of his nation. However, as Gamilans begin their migration, an unidentified massive power attacks them and completely warps their twin planet—Iscandar, Queen Starsha's home. Meanwhile, Earth is celebrating the success of the magnificent Space Battleship Yamato and its heroic crew. A new generation of promising recruits joins Yamato and its two new support ships, led by Yuki Mori and Shirou Sanada. But not everyone agrees with the past decisions of its captain, Susumu Kodai. During the Yamato's six-month-long training mission and diplomatic meeting with the Gamilans, the crew learns of the recent catastrophe, and against all orders, Kodai commands the fleet to Iscandar to aid the surviving refugees. Slight Spoilers I am loving this series and has quickly become one of my favorites since I picked up 2199 in 2017. Disclaimer, I have not watched the original Yamato seasons and have only seen the modern rendition of the series. After the events of 2202, Earth is recovering from its battle against Gatlantis and the planet Gamilas is dying. An unknown faction attacks Gamilas and the Cosmo Navy is hesitant to enter the conflict becuase its in a weakened state after 2202. This is where the story of 2205 begins. The events of 2199 and 2202 reverberate throughout the universe and plot threads from thoseseasons are further developed. The first 4 episodes are a mixed bag for me. I found everything with Dessler and the story of Gamilas phenomenal. However, the Earth plot is much weaker as it's trying to introduce us to a handful of new characters. It's not bad, I just found the Gamilas story and politics amongst the different factions of the universe more interesting. Plus it was great to see Kodai continue to develop as a leader and captain of the Yamato. However, for me just like the first 2 seasons, Yamato has a slow start and snowballs into something amazing. I find that to be the same case for 2205. Because episodes 5,6,7, and 8 were phenomenal. The action was fun and the reveals were great and felt earned. Dessler steals the show for this season and I will always welcome further development of his character. This was another great season for one of my new favorites and I am more than excited for Rebel 3199.

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2205: Aratanaru TabidachiAnime (2021) Rather an odd set of extra episodes or 2 films as it seems to be broadcast in some formats. Here I saw it in 8 episodes, with the first 4 setting the scene and the second 4 is the climax to a very rushed ending. The story is set 3 years after the last season and ending of the time fault to a new fleet lead by this now very old but famous ship with some sister ships. The art is the same as before, it really hasn't changed at all unless you look really hard. Art isn't theissue. The sound is the same as ever and again, not the issue. Character development is pretty odd here, some characters from the first season are completely forgiven for the mutiny even though they instigated it and yet others are still treated awfully, not the fairest thing going. You also have another let's take over someone's home through war again but make it look good because slavery is now bad even though they did it before. The general feel of the show is that they keep bringing god-like enemies that are defeated through the emotions of the desire to win as we are more human than they are. Also interesting to see how the people everyone so admired are basically the worst people going and forgiveness rains upon all. I think the character development at times was sort of unnecessary and should have been more of a continuation since it doesn't always make sense. I mean in 3199 do we get more new characters that suddenly develop through what can be seen as one-line backstories? Overall, whilst not the best in the series it is a good 7/10. The OVA/Movies from this can feel... odd.
