Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai 8
闇芝居 8期
Once again, the mysterious storyteller draws in the ears of any willing to listen to his macabre tales of madness—ones that could happen to anyone, no matter who they might be. The ghastly stories delve into the cases of teenagers testing their courage at an abandoned home; children navigating nefarious family traditions; malicious apparitions haunting the lives of innocent people; individuals helplessly watching their loved ones slowly go insane; a woman growing increasingly concerned when her husband's behavior changes after eating something odd; and an evil snowman or two. These chilling tales promise to leave no soul unstirred in the most disturbing way yet. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Yami Shibai wanted to be a show with legends, but today it is nothing more than a myth forgotten by its quality that falls more than long American series. It is already the third attempt of union between the new studio Drawiz and the ILCA. Since then, Yami Shibai 7 and Ninja Collection have been produced, but they have not yielded good reviews, especially when it comes to what is the biggest problem with horror stories: textual quality. Yami Shibai was never a franchise that honored the suspense and horror genre, because no matter what season, something always prevented the anime from really being a goodthing. This time, for the thousandth time, the "terror" applied to Yami Shibai cannot even be considered a terror. It is an immeasurable affront for lovers of macabre stories... I will not say that Yami Shibai 8 did not try. In fact, this was the season when I saw more variety in terms of what could be reused from the anime. Some stories are even like a re-adaptation of an old one (like the house of laughter). Other episodes had a change in the art of the characters and in the way of telling their ghastly tales. But, let's agree, none of this really put the anime in a good quality. Again, the show aims to bring a Japanese culture very focused on legends and urban histories, something common in the country, but when this is done with contempt and inertia, without developing a posture of innovation in the narrative, Yami Shibai becomes boring, VERY BORING. It has been a while since many people forgot about this show, which just became a "taboo" within its own focus, the audience that likes anime. Many like the show and I also have a fondness for the importance that Yami Shibai has as an exploration of the audiovisual resources and the adaptation of his kamishibais, something that I always try to value. However, it is easy to understand the decadence of the show. In fact, it is noticeable. Since the fourth season (Where they introduced takes with scenes in live action), the anime already showed signs of being something of deep disappointment. Yami Shibai 8 just confirmed what I imagined. The third season really was a great set of episodes that, although it didn’t reach the same level of quality as the practically forgotten first season, it was irreverent and introduced grotesque creatures very well, without being appealing or exaggerated, nor did it use the common animation features. To continue like this until today would be great, but unfortunately that was not the case. Today the show is completely lost... More than a hundred stories (104, to be exact) have passed and not a tenth of that is really interesting... Finally, I'm sick of looking at Yami Shibai and waiting for another sequel. In fact, I've been watching all the seasons for the past few months and it wasn't easy. Furthermore, I didn't even start some (5th, 6th and 7th), as it is not really necessary to admire this one. But in the end, Yami Shibai always missed something. The anime does not please and lost the interest of the majority, including mine. Will I continue to follow the show if I have a new sequel? Perhaps, it is always good to have something short to see, but I no longer expect anything from the anime, or my interest.

Oh where, oh where do I begin with Yami Shibai season 8. I've been following this anime since I found it during season 6 and I've binged through it quite a few times and I'm just so disappointed. The first 3 seasons are astounding, truly something that made me shiver and look over my shoulder and now.... Season 8 is the weak, heat tinted wind that blows through the garden on an extremely hot day and merely taunts you with the expectation of coolness whilst slowly cooking you faster. I didn't expect too much from this season — since season 4, Yami Shibai has been slowly decliningin quality on its horror, as to be expected from something that only allows four and a half minutes to actively terrify you. I expect a few bad episodes here and there, you can't provide ten out of ten levels of horror with every stab in the dark that you take, but season eight leaves the viewer horrified upon realising the episodes have ended with barely any context to what the episodes were about at all. Yami Shibai had a good run of not revealing anything to the viewer whilst still scaring us via the art of hiding, making us realize things are much scarier in the dark — now, I merely turn the light on and can't figure out what was making that weird shadow, scratching my head in confusion as I stare around my room, lost, annoyed and confused. I lost count of how many episodes I spent praying to any deity there was an explanation in the comments of what had actually happened. It's time to start letting Yami Shibai go; the eighth season is purely about quantity not quality, and the only way this show can now be saved is if the horror greats themselves wrote the episodes. It's painful to see what Yami Shibai has become, after it's long reign of terror, but now the horror lies in its screenwriting, unable to tell a story coherently enough for viewers to know what's occurring. Let the series rest, revive it in a few years perhaps when there's better ideas floating around, but for now, the show needs to rest on the back burner before further seasons tank even worse than what season eight did.

I love the Yamishibai series. It's unfortunate that there aren't many horror-themed anime in the industry. The voice acting in each episode is consistently good not half baked at all. The storyteller’s voice is excellent, as always. The ending music, however, is just "meh." The animation has improved slightly, about 5% better, but the art style remains the same, which makes sense since it's based on Kamishibai, a traditional Japanese storytelling method using paper cutouts. Some of the stories this season are actually better than in previous ones, but most are unsatisfying. They often leave you hanging, with no proper conclusion and open to interpretation. I liked it overall, butI just wish the stories had proper endings.

If you thought season 3 was the worst, you might want to think again. Y'know it tells you so much when one would rather watch the shitshow of a season 3 to whatever-the-fuck this was. I'm beyond pissed as I'm writing this. Basically this abomination in a nutshell: Narration was off through the whole season. It's like the narrator saw how godawful this season was from miles ago and didn't want to narrate it. The narration is extremely random one line narration. Some examples from actual episodes: "a story of a family" "a story of a office worker" "a story of a college student" that's it.That's all the narration was. What? And now onto the "story": Guy is paranoid turns out everything was in his head. Guy is schizophrenic turns out he imagined the whole thing. Kid is anxious and demons are in his head. A office worker is tired to the point of death and searches for escape And the voice in her mind leads her to the escape. Guy cheats. His family leaves. Leading him to fall in depression. I could go on and on but you get the idea. Seems like they wanted to focus on the psychological theme but ended up forgetting there is no "horror" element to any of this. These are some serious mental health issues. I'm pretty sure one voice actor was damn near ready to giving up on the last episode. The voice actors were too fed up with this. Enough of this. I'm ending this here: this season is just a highschool girl trying to be quirky and deep but end up looking like a joke. That's this season.
