My Next Life As a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! The Movie serves as a nice bit of recovery after my disappointment with the last arc of season 2. A tight 90 minutes of setup and payoff with so many proverbial Chekov’s Guns that the third act becomes a delightful game of doing that Leo pointing meme when you realize just how much was being foreshadowed. That said, the first half was definitely undercut by a distinct lack of the stuff that made this story so fun in the first place, i.e. being the forerunner of the isekai villainess subgenre, missing that extra spicethat made me fall in love with this franchise way back in 2020. It also does its best to earn the movie upgrade in terms of visual quality. The character designs are a bit cleaner and have an extra layer of polish to make their core aspects really pop, and the lighting is a bit more accentuated than in the TV series, though a lot of the scenes that take place in darkness are a bit difficult to make out at times. It also tries its hand at having a more explosive action scene in the climax, which, while not the easiest to read visually, does have enough forward momentum to keep it exciting. To paraphrase another reviewer, Silver Link has always been the little studio that could, constantly punching above their weight class even when they don’t quite have the resources to do so, and that’s more or less a good descriptor of what we have here. We haven’t quite rebounded back to season 1 levels and I highly doubt we’ll get much more from this franchise, but at least we got this fun little self-contained story featuring my favorite oblivious villainess.
