This will be a bit offensive, but... let's be honest, if someone does a review about an anime, but only displays hatred towards it's art style or main character or even just the animation quality, sorry to say, I have to say you're the problem, not the anime! If you're criticizing based on those little things, don't forget, these reviews are for criticizing the anime as a whole package, not for criticizing the animation studio or the author by themselves! Why did I start like that? well, I know, many would hate this series simply because of unobjective reasons, like, let's be honest, I too hatehow Himeko acts that makes me want to kill her myself, BUT, the story as a whole package, I must say, is rich in detail, or rather, emotionally complex. From early episodes, it was clear that it's going that way, as in, I already noticed that the "comedy" part is a mislead, since it felt somehow depressing from the start, with lots of suspicious characters showing up, to an end of a season (i do hope there's a 2nd season on this) that makes me start questioning (again) about life and humanity. That might sound like I'm exaggerating things but, as far as the season goes... well, the easiest way to say it is, if you do end up watching it, try to understand the background story and the emotional states of each character there to get what I'm talking about.

Plus-sized Misadventures in Love was a uniquely fun and heartwarming show that could have easily been 10/10 for me if the story hadn’t ended completely unanswered. Yumeko is the protagonist, and her uplifting attitude and body positivity are so refreshing! Especially considering that anime still doesn’t showcase different shapes and sizes of women. She is a wonderful MC, someone you can’t help rooting for, and I truly would love to have someone like her as a friend. The other characters in the show were all pretty well-fleshed out and likable...except for one. Rikka. And for me, she was someone who truly needed more backstory and characterbuilding. Though I don’t want to give away spoilers regarding her, so I’ll leave it at that. As for the romance, while I did enjoy the relationship that flourished between Yumeko and Keisuke, it was rather PG throughout most of the story, despite them being adults. One of the things I love about adult love stories is that it typically means more maturity; however, this pairing felt very juvenile. Though, despite that, I did still love them together, even if what we got was more platonic than romantic. Moving to the plot. Each episode had me guessing: what really happened to Yumeko? I was itching to know what fate she endured to end up with her amnesia. What really happened with the group of suspects that were there that night, too? I thoroughly expected the final episode to finally unravel the tangle of mystery and reveal what had transpired prior to and during that night. And yet...we weren’t given anything. Even more, I thought Yumeko’s memories would finally return, and we could see her side of past events... Again, nothing. Even more perplexing is that it’s not as if this leaves off on a clear cliffhanger that makes it seem as though Season 2 will give us the answers we’re looking for. So, I’m not entirely certain whether we will find out - or - if the writers are just going to move forward into other avenues. Which would be pretty disappointing, as the murder mystery part of this show was its most engaging facet. Overall, I did love and recommend this anime, but I just wish they had properly ended the original arc prior to the next season. It was not only unsatisfying to end everything unresolved, but in my opinion, it was a disservice to viewers who watched all twelved 12 epsiodes, wondering and waiting for answers that never actually arrived.

Deeply upbeat light drama. Its generally a light screwball comedy, but also deals with some deeper messaging about relationships, grief and mindset. While its comedy is fairly hit and miss, the characters are generally both likeable and have an underlying sense of self and logic which drives the drama. Its also quite deft at pivoting between tones. Its focus on a larger protagonist is novel, and plays into the shows message about how attitude can be important. However, the fact that the protagonist is large and unattractive is also a constant source of jokes so its a mixed bag if thats the appeal. On the other hand, the adaptation doesn't get far enough into the material to solve any of the shows mysteries. As a standalone, therefore, its not that worthwhile. It also ends on a clip show, which is bizarrely awful.

Really enjoyed this but the moral of this story is something that leaves me very conflicted and takes the story from just having human contradictions to simply being inconsistent. On the positive side, the humor of the show is great and the overall message through the arc of our main character is fantastic, as well as the way they handled the self hatred she had for herself before being handled with the utmost care... Problem is that every other issue is handled very poorly, and not in a way that just ruins the narrative but in a way that goes beyond irresponsible. There are some characters thatoutright betray others, engage in cheating and even do some pretty dark things that I can't mention without spoiling... AND THE SHOW REDEEMS THEM. It even has our MC say that even if the guy she's crushing on has done said things, she doesn't care. In a show that captured me in the beginning with its positive message, that thing alone brought down the entire thing for me and leaves me with dictionary definition mixed feelings. It's still enjoyable, but it's hard to recommend this without a disclaimer...

Okay, this is a fine watch. I definitely recommend people to watch this as the plot itself does have its interesting elements. BUT, I also want to mention that it does leave A LOT of questions unanswered. So, I'm really hoping for a 2nd season where it will finally further explore the mystery behind the character's backgrounds! (If I knew this was going to happen, I would've just waited for a possible 2nd season...) Now I haven't bothered reading other people's reviews, but I'm probably guessing one of them is about the animation?? I do agree that the animation is quite...lacking and simple. The way Yumeko hasbeen drawn especially her side profile, really irritates me cause her profile itself is drawn just fine. Anyways, it's watchable and if this overall was a turn off, I would've dropped it without hesitation. Also I really like Yumeko! That positive and self-confident personality is something to admire for! You can say her personality was also one that kept me going in the series. It's definitely a different take and I actually applaud the original for coming out with this because I feel in this day and age, this series goes against current society view of beauty standards especially ones that are extremely toxic. I hope this short review helps with deciding whether or not to watch this anime. I for one might have a hard time coming back to watch this if there is no 2nd season, but if there is I'm more than happy to give this a rewatch in hopes for questions to be answered!
