The world is vast and full of wonders. In the mystical realm of Lizhu Cave, a destitute youth destined for greatness finds his fate upended when his life-bound porcelain shatters. Though fortune beckons, it remains tantalizingly out of reach. As a result, powerful figures begin weaving intricate schemes around him, turning the boy into the linchpin of their designs. "Sword of Coming" is a different kind of donghua. It's an extremely slow-paced story that spends a good chunk of its time fleshing out its characters and their backstories. As a result, it's very dialogue-heavy. The protagonist is also extremely interesting. He doesn’t have OP powers or incredible luck—instead, he makes those around him extremely lucky. But he himself is not, which makes the story both funny and sad at the same time. So, if you're looking for a fast-paced, action-heavy story, this donghua isn’t for you. Don’t even bother watching it because you won’t like it anyway. But if you're looking for a donghua with: *Breathtaking CGI animation*No OP protagonist *A slow-paced story with strong character development. Then this is exactly what you’re looking for. Can’t wait for the second season!

This work, even though it has a slow pace, is very good. The story is very captivating and has interesting twists, even though many people don't like stories like this. If you give it a chance, watch it with an open mind may end up liking it (or not). Some characters: The main character Chen Ping'an is not the typical main character who has everything handed to him, he suffers a lot because of some things involving a mysterious event in the past from him. Ning Yao, who is the main female character in the story, is a strong and determined person who is not afraid to facedangers greater than herself. Her interactions with Chen Ping'an are very good and it is clear that in the future the two will end up having something more than a simple friendship. Professor Qi JingChun is the typical enigmatic master who never makes it clear what he means by his words, even though I don't like him at first, he eventually becomes somewhat some redemption at least in my view. There are some other characters but they weren't explored much, but from what little was shown they are also very interesting.

Allow me to prepare you mentally to enjoy this masterpiece. This is also a cultivation donghua, but this season focuses on introducing the origin of the MC. The whole season is to help you connect emotionally with him and be ready for his growth. Other characters are also introduced. Fighting is not the focus this season, the few that exist are super impressive visually, in addition to the interesting reasons that caused them. This was done to tell the origin story thoroughly before cultivation and fighting begins in the following seasons. The characters have depth and are unique. The MC (Chen Pingan): Through watching the story, evenbefore he gains powers, just from how his origin story told, you will understand that he is the absolute greatest donghua character ever (Forget Porpularity). A powerful saint is inspired by Chen Pingan's Character, a powerful sword spirit (that did not choose a master for 6000 yrs) selected him as her master even before he became a caltivator just because of his unique character. He is not OP(Yet😂) but but he's not a slouch either. Even when facing a cultivator he will fight, he doesn't have fighting techniques/skills yet but he's strong, fast, highly intelligent and able to spot weaknesses mid fight and respond accordingly. The music goes well with the pace and emotion of the story. For example, in the story there's an important character that dies, but the story doesn't want to make you sad or miserable, but rather inspired, so the song chosen for that scene sounds emotional and inspiring. The end of the season doesn't end like an incomplete story, you understand fully that this part is finished and the journey of Chen Pingan begins. ***No matter how powerfull or popular the other famous donghua characters are, based on storytelling alone Chen Pingan is the greatest, maybe Han Li can compete, but the rest aren't even close.***

A prologue to hopefully bigger things. First season of Sword of Coming explores Chen Pingan's childhood, sets up some relationships with different characters and displays powerful individuals having some fights. The story is confined to a village where cultivation levels are suppressed, allowing mortals and cultivators to live together. What I like about Sword of Coming as a whole is how unique this start is. The MC is pretty useless for the entire 26 episodes. He's a guy who does a lot of stone picking, herb collecting and fishing, but is constantly dealing with cultivators regardless. This allows for at least some action and plot developments. It's alsovery obvious that some of the people in the village are extremely powerful, and Chen Pingan probably won't be as strong as they are for a while. Kind of sets up power structure in a believable way, since we have strong people in the prologue, rather than having it "scale" to Chen Pingan. And if it's not obvious already, no, he doesn't cultivate yet at all. Visuals are good, biggest thing I'd point out is how some textures were a little lower resolution than they should've been, and I think some character models were a lot more refined and lifelike than others. So the graphics can be a little unbalanced. At the time of writing this, I couldn't find any official english source to watch, and the translations I found made understanding the overall plot a bit hard. Hence the mixed review. Hopefully there is some sort of proper western release later.

Many donghua start with the MC dying in betrayal, only to be reborn with special bodies or rare abilities, in a world where even the dogs cultivate. This is not one of those stories. Aside from the brief opening glimpse of Chen Ping'an's eventual power, it focuses on a young man orphaned as a child, living in a secret realm where only visiting seekers seem to possess power. Chen Ping'an is not a traditional hero, nor is this a story of his rise to greatness. It is a story of interactions with visiting cultivators and the powerful figures who reside in the secret realm and protect its people. If you do not pay attention, you might miss the subtle darkness associated with those who visit the realm only to search for what could be considered slaves to take back to the normal world. There is also a sense of impending doom: the secret realm is breaking apart, and many who know seem perfectly willing to leave the inhabitants behind. The slower pacing is one of the series’ strengths. By refusing to rush from conflict to conflict, it allows the world and its people to unfold naturally. Small interactions carry weight, and the quiet, unsettling truths of the secret realm emerge gradually rather than being dumped on the viewer. This pacing also provides time for the world outside the secret realm to come into focus, revealing its dangers and complexities piece by piece. That is not to say there aren’t fights. They’re visually stunning, but they’re never just there for the pretty lights. Each one carries weight. In a landscape full of reincarnated prodigies and instant power-ups, this story stands apart. It trades spectacle for sincerity, speed for substance. And in doing so, it becomes something far more memorable. As for what comes next, the story of Chen Ping'an continues in Season 2, scheduled to begin showing on 25 December 2026. We also have a theatrical release of Sword of Coming: The 13th Sword (Battle of Thirteen) to look forward to.
