One Way or Another
大道朝天
A person who has traveled all over the green mountains is still young, but when he suddenly looks back, the sword is just between his eyebrows, but in his heart. Jing Jiu, who lives in a mountain village in Chaotian Continent, unexpectedly receives Liu Shisui, who is born with Taoism, as a book boy. The two came to the Qingshan Sect by chance, but they were criticized because the "mediocre" Jing Jiu actually took the "extraordinary genius" Liu Shisui as his servant. At the sword inheritance conference, Jing Jiu also met Zhao Layue, a Sanwu girl from Shenmo Peak. Jing Jiu, who is surprisingly "lazy", just wants to practice quietly, but little does he know that fate will involve the three of them in a huge river and lake dispute... Under the Taixu, are the green mountains far away? Not far. (Source: Bilibili, Google translated)

This show is alright. My favorite part is the thought exercise of considering the world from the POV of somebody who has already lived a full life. As I was putting myself in the main character’s shoes, I realized just how pointless and insignificant all of our daily struggles are. My second favorite part of this show is that it sometimes gives a reflective interior monologue for some random character, often a supporting character that doesn’t seem that important. This pulls us out of the hero focus and adds depth to everyone. It also contributes to the reflective, tranquil tone of theshow. What do I like less? Probably everything else. The world is a bit confusing, and with so many characters and subsects, I had trouble keeping them straight. The story is a lot of typical cultivation stuff, with some element of a mystery to uncover, developing both forward and backward; but all in all, not that gripping. I didn’t find the main characters to be either likeable or unlikable, just ok enough to watch. I do like that there is no love story; it wouldn’t have fit in, either. But I didn’t feel anything particular for the main characters, except maybe the little boy, but his story seems to have been pushed off for a Season 2 that may or may not come. The music is ok, art is ok. This is a 3D donghua and the characters look pretty good, but I watched Island of Siliang right before and in comparison, it’s not quite as gorgeous. I would watch a second season- in fact, I do want to know what happens next. But I won’t be crying if it doesn’t come.

Based on the web novel by Mao Ni, these 16 episodes only begin to hint at the larger storyline. Whether there will be another season (or seasons) is pretty much unknown at this time. Most of Mao Ni's works end up doing well as live action adaptations (Joy of Life, Ever Night, Ze Tian Ji); donghua, not so much. That being said, this is more of a self-contained atmospheric piece than a full-on retelling of Adventure, given that it only covers what is essentially Prologue for the novel. What we are given is marvelous. Fantasy and mystery play a big role, along with characterizationsthat are softer than implied within the novel. Consider this a gateway to reading the novel and anticipate a much different tone there. Some things simply do not translate well between mediums. Story: 6/10. Not because it is weak, but because it is intentionally limited. This is Prologue; the thunder in the distance before the storm arrives. Animation and Art: 7/10. Clean CG with consistent character acting. Not extravagant, but visually cohesive. Sound: 7/10. Solid voice work and music that supports the fantasy/mystery tone. Characters: 7/10. They fit the adaptation’s gentler approach, even if they are softer than implied in the novel. Enjoyment: 10/10. For me, this is a delightful self‑contained piece. Outside the context of the novel, it becomes a memorable experience on its own terms. Overall: 10/10. Not because it’s complete, but because it succeeds in providing a quiet, mysterious, beautifully crafted gateway into the world Mao Ni creates in the novel.

AWESOME donghua. Interesting plot, easy-going strong mc who just relaxes, so many at the sect considers him unworthy of being the master of a genius servant. Binge-watched it at one go, looking forward to season 2. Is the story unique? - Story is unique, with interesting plot. There are fights with good build ups in the story. It doesn't fail to achieve what it sets to achieve. S1 has ended and it definitely deserves a second one. Do you think the art style is fitting for the story? - It is definitely well animated, it is not 2d comic style. Were the characters well-rounded? - Character dynamics and interactions arewell written. The 3 main lead are very genuine and likeable. Did the characters react to situations and events in a realistic way? - Yes. Do you think others will enjoy/dislike this series? - Veterans are always out of new donghuas to watch. Luckily, this one is enjoyable. If you are not set on watching sth else, give it a try.
