Mumei no Jinsei

This is someone's masterpiece. I went into it reading the description expecting a worse but still interesting Goodnight Punpun. What I got a was a messy, but commendable, attempt at stylised yet emotional anime. The film's... interesting animation style and use of changing aspect ratios makes for a cool concept, but a sometimes annoying viewing experience. Though, I really like some of the ideas and story beats on display and it is conceptually great. However it really stumbles in the final act. It was strikingly artistic, confusing, and probably deeply personal, though felt far too out of the blue to make any structural sense. Minor spoilersbut it could be seen as akin to 2001: A Space Oddessy's psychadelic sci-fi ending, minus Kubrick's touch and felt less like a payoff and more of another setup. A bit of exposition would be greatly appriciated. Although I have these complaints, the clearly personal storytelling and artistic elements endear me enough not to write it off. Overall: 5/10
