Leina Kenrou Densetsu

Leina: Legend of the Wolf Sword is a direct sequel to Machine Robo which appeared in the late 80s in OVA format. One does not need to watch the prequel anime because the way this was made was more of an expansion. The show ended perfectly resolving the overarching plot, at most you will need a bit of context in regards to why are the main characters doing what they're doing which is easy: 3 guys and 1 girl fight against evil entities on different planets each episode, their power is transforming into mechas. The episodes are stand alone so one can drop this when they getbored without risking of not knowing the end. Different staffers were involved in each one hence the weird development and confusing watch. Talking about the quality of the anime, episode 1 managed to create an interesting school mystery for Leina to solve, the setting is a normal earth-like planet and cute JK appear, I was very delighted seeing Leina dressed casually, she is using her robo design from the tv only as armor when she transforms (same as the others). The pacing is soothing and calm while action happens only at the end making this a very solid and entertaining episode to watch. Episodes 2 and 3 are action heavy, they don't even bother to specify who is who and why are the villains attacking and what are the stakes, imagine watching the last episode of a 13 action show without watching the first 12, that's how the second and third episodes of this OVA were. It was fun and all because of the fights and drama but very confusing and annoying. The art style is basic 80-90s for mecha shows, girls look cute and have normal proportions, the mecha are super detailed and the animation provides nice action moments. Usually OVAs have more fanservice than tv of that time but not in this case, at most we see Leina naked but no nipples showing while some girls are drawn in sexy attire. As a conclusion, Leina Densetsu is a entertaining mecha anime with action and cool robots, with a clean nice art style and very good city pop-like music of its era. People who watched Machine Robo and liked Leina's character will be thrilled because she plays a bigger role here, she is basically in 90% of episode 1 screentime. But if you wanted a cool story as developed as the tv then you will be disappointed.
