Marine Boy
海底少年マリン
Yet another expansion of the Marine Boy series. This time 65 episodes were added to the 1966 series and all 78 episodes were sold to the US. The broadcast history of the show in Japan was slightly more complicated, with only the first 36 episodes of the 78 shown at first but later on all 78 were shown, out of which 65 are contained in this entry and 13 in the Ganbare! Marine Kid series. Marine is now equipped with an underwater boomerang, a hydrojet, and the mermaid Neptuna/Neptina has become his girlfriend. Some previous episodes from Ganbare! Marine Kid had their footage recycled in part for this series. (Source: The Anime Encyclopedia)

Wow! I am utterly surprised to find this title on here. Kaitei Shounen Marine or Marine Boy as was titled when the reruns ran on tv when I was little, is partly responsible for my love of animation (all kinds) today. When compared to animations of the time, Marine Boy stood out. It created a fantasy world where normal people (not just mer-people) could live underwater and swim all kinds of creatures/beings including mer-people. One piece of asper gum is all that was needed. The colors were bright and inviting. The situations were just tense and exciting enough for thelittle me. Like most classics, especially ones from the late '60s/early '70s, you have to take it as it is. Comparing it to modern anime only does it a disservice. I wouldn't recommend it for the average anime viewer, just the connoissuer or those who remember it. Because it's a classic part of me wants to give it a 10 if only for sentimental reasons. Marine Boy will forever have a special place in my heart.

You didn't have to live in the 60's to enjoy Marine Boy. I'm 27 years old as I write this and discovered this anime several years ago while browsing the internet. The funny thing is I must have seen an episode when I was very young because it seemed familiar to me so I started watching it. Considering the anime is old it still holds up pretty well for its age. Check out the trailer by Warner Archive, who have recently released the first season on DVD, to see how good it looks. Marine Boy is a charming, undersea adventure filled with action, excitement and some memorablecharacters such as his friends, dolphin Splasher and mermaid Neptina. He ends up battling a whole host of sea monsters and pirates to protect the seas while working for the Ocean Patrol. Marine Boy is quite well equipped for the job too with a special wetsuit that can deflect bullets which also contains propeller boots. He also uses an electric boomerang and chews a special gum to allow him to breathe underwater. Despite this he still winds up captured on the odd occasion. There's plenty of episodes that explores sea life and the advantages and dangers of it while the show keeps you entertained with its wild villains. I have a feeling Marine Boy will become more popular as the DVD is released with new people discovering it as well as age old fans being able to reminisce. This is the show that made me become a fan of 60's anime. If you want to know more please check out my blog: http://thematropolis.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/marine-boy.html
