However, a flashback revealed that he was once a Pokémon poacher, though he renounced this line of work after having a battle against Volkner and Flint when they were kids, after which he befriended them. The Proprietor, like Flint, had become frustrated with Volkner's lacking motivation and refusal to return to his role as the Sunyshore Gym Leader. After spotting a spark in Volkner in Flint Sparks the Fire!, he instructed Flint to battle Ash and forced Volkner to watch. The ploy worked, as Volkner regained his interest in battling and agreed to go up against Ash. In The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!, the Proprietor returned to his café while Ash and Volkner had their Gym battle, though it soon lost power after Team Rocket stole the Sunyshore Tower. He and several other electrical engineers helped restore Sunyshore City's main generator and power supply.
