When it comes to Chinese donghua, or even Korean manhwas being adapted into Japanese anime, I'm not a consistent fan whatsoever; because for me, they can either be GREAT hits (Link Click, Solo Leveling, etc.) or HARD misses (Noblesse, King's Avatar, etc.). But this anime is easily a great hit. Imagine a world that encapsulates the essence of Chinese culture, while also granting you a fun twist of Pokemon-type brawls and team-based fights. That is essentially what this story is about, as the purpose of the story is based on the progression of the main character's team, which comes from proving their skills as pettrainers. From the first episode, it won't take long for you to feel completely immersed into the world that this anime presents. Of course, one thing to also mention is how insanely good the animation quality is. This is coming from the same studio that produced The Super Cube, and they didn't hold back when it came to animating this show as well. The fight scenes are CRISP, and the music very much adds to the intensity and feel that the showrunners wished for the audience to attain. All in all, I have nothing but praise for this anime, and I seriously hope they announce a season 2 ASAP.

The All-devouring Whale: Homecoming starts off as a banger, but that, sadly, don't last long. At the end of the day, is Pokemon with good animation and bad storytelling and development. Most of the time, Donghuas are hit or miss, this one is a miss. The story is rushed a lot, it skips characters trainning, pets just get aquired instantly, not real development of their bonds and they just seem to accept anything, not raising their eyebrows to anything. The levels of power are just for show, they throw some cultivation level like its suppose to mean anything even tho all the weaker poke-spirits always winjust for the sake of the plot armor. The protagonist is suppose to be this amazing Master, that have this aura of wisdom, at least that is how he is shown in every flashback on the show (which they keep pushing even to reming himself of how he is), but for some reason they decided to ignore all that after the first 2 episodes and make him just a comic relief with unbeatable poke-spirits. Its animation is top tier, that is without question. The motion of the scenes, the scenary and the battles are amazing to see, but thats about it. It felt like they didnt care about anything other than some good OST, fight scenes and left the story all over the place. At the end of the day felt like a really generic show with one or two good things but with a terrible execution. It was worth watching? I don't know... I guess, I mean I've seen worse things. Do I recommend? No, unless you are really bored and don't mind watching stuff without caring for the story.
